InoculateIT Personal Edition (IPE) Since June, the level of virus activity on the Internet has increased to the point of making the older technology used in the IPE program obsolete. This adversely impacts our ability to maintain high quality support. Consequently, we have made the decision to end the InoculateIT Personal Edition program effective May 15th, 2002.

Between now and May 15th, users of InoculateIT Personal Edition will need to select a new Antivirus solution. We truly would like to keep you as a customer and in the spirit of the IPE program have established my-eTrust.com as the price leader among the leading Antivirus providers.

Looks like Inoculate will no longer be supported. No more Virus Definition updates after May 15th.
So now, whats the best free Anti-virus?
AntiVirŪ Personal Edition (http://www.free-av.com/)
AVG 6.0 Free Edition (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_downl.htm)
Which one?

Give me a break, please. They're offering a deal for $9.95 until May 30th. Close to "free" as you'll get.

Sarge, they have found it so easy and convenient to discontinue support for the other, how long do you think they will support this.

To my jaundiced eye this is what they said. My opinion only.
"All you freeloaders out there had better find yourselves another free ride, because as of May 15th you ain't riding this horse anymore. We are taking the opportunity that presents itself to rid ourselves of all you leeches because we are not working for free anymore. If you want to pay us fine, we'll continue to perform."

I sorry, but I only give any entity one opportunity to pull the rug from under me. They have done so, so I no longer trust them.

So, I should be looking to get Trend Micro- best AV, IMHO if you have to pay for.

I've been using AVG for about 4 months now and haven't had any viruses with it. It has a nice interface and you can schedule automatic downloads if you want (among other things). I don't use the scheduler though, at the first of the month I just remember to update--and all you do is hit the update button and it starts downloading (not like my previous one (Cheyenne) where you had to go search for your update on their site).:)

what are you talking about?is this different than norton or pc-cillin antivirus programs,i haven't been into computers long and this is new to me.

I've been on the Net since a PBell 75 was the fastest (at least the 75 was). I only had 1 experience with a virus (Sir Cam) and Zone Alarm nailed it soon as wifey clicked it.

I don't see e-trust pulling the rug out. From free to $9.95 (by May 31) or $20 upfront for others, isn't much. Think about all the work and resources that go into a virus software and updates. I can't even get a plate of ribs for $9.95. A matter of priorities, I suppose.

E-Trust is being very reasonable, remember that Norton is around $45 to buy (with 1 free year) and $9.95 a year for definition subscriptions. Seems to me that the InoculateIT PE was acknowledged as a BETA and they discontinued registration last year. I think it's very accomodating that they have allowed updates as long as they have.

If you still insist on a freebie, AVG works good enough.

You might try Fix-It Utilities by Ontrack.
I have used them for years, and the suite comes with all sorts of utilities to keep your computer trouble free.
They have been very up to date on the virus definitions and such, and the product is well priced too.
Dont mean to sound like a commercial but Ive heard negative things about Norton and some others.

two things:

(1) the updates ARE still available and they still work with IPE The FTP is still functioning 100%. I see no evidence that the format will change seeing that they are designed for EZ Trust. Avaiability may be the only obstacle to keep using IPE.

(2) EZ Trust is the same identical product, at the moment, as IPE was. The only change is that the installer doesn't have to be hacked to install on a sytem w/ another VScan installed. It just gives you the option to ignore their warning. I only use on-demand functions, so other aspects may have been changed.

I purchased the EZ Trust update and am running it on my 2K boot.

I didn't bother to change over from IPE on my 98 boot and the updates still work 100% with IPE (same dat files).

Their excuse is both weak and inaccurate, but the product is very good and $10 a year is a fair price.

What they are saying is that IPE will no longer update after May 15th.

I just got the $9.95 version. Installed w/o a hitch, as was wondering if I had to uninstall the freebie. I didn't. Now gotta do the other 2 pc's. The $$ wasn't bad, considering the 3 versions of Norton now residing in my closet, and the 2 versions of McAfee.

Im going to go with AVG for now.

Has there been a direct comparison of all of these anit-virus programs to each other? Any testing? If so, who has this info?

I guess I should clarify the above statements. I have no problems with the desire to make money from their product and I do think the price is fair. I do have a problem with them not coming out and saying it and using, as an excuse, something that has no bearing on their decision. (sorta like our government) I am against spin of any type and when someone or something lies to me about something, he will lie about anything else when it suits them.

Exactly when was the best time to say they would start charging? Perhaps I missed something, but remember seeing no spin or lies.
