Socket A alert.

Those of you with or getting Socket A boards,avoid the "golden Orb"for Socket A.
Although it claims to have a new clip(which it does)that is suitable for Socket A,the force needed to get it on could be damaging to your system and cpu.
It crushed my Duron.
Of all essential items needed for Socket A,cooling heads the list.
It is adviseable to put heatsinks and fans on all hot chips on the board.
Make sure the heatsink is fully seated on your cpu.Check out AMD'S site for approved heatsinks.

With modern motherboards and more powerful devices checking in at AMD'S approved power supplies,heatsinks,etc can benifit anyone.
Including Intel users.
It simply means that the devices listed have been tested and comply with the stringent tests AMD applies.
This benifits us all!

This is the same story told by Intel "copper-mine" CPU users of either CeleronII or PIII. It seems the force by some aftermarket cooling devices use excessive force and damage has been done.
For Intel folks, be absolutely certain that the heatsink/fan assembly is level to the CPU surface. The reduced contact area of Cu CPU`s makes this more critical. This would apply to any CPU. There only needs to be enough force to hold the heatsink/fan assembly in FULL contact. Excessive force HAS damaged beyond use a number of CPU`s.

I've read about this over at www.amdzone.com, (http://www.amdzone.com,) it seems alpha has cooler that will work....but I read one story where the cooler wasn't properly mounted..the cpu had rubber feet and so did the alpha cooler....to make a long story short....the cooler wasn't properly mounted....cause of the rubber feet on both parts....so bye bye 1ghz t-bird. Global Win is supposed to be bringing out a new cooler sometime for the athlon/duron called the FOP 38 I believe.

Thanks for the forewarning alfie, i have heard about it, i did get that gorb through coolerguys.com, what I am probably going to do is pop the clip off and using emery paper and a piece of glass and just take some of the meat off the mounting base of the Orb, hopefully it won't take too much sanding http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/wink.gif and perhaps tweak the clip itself, but i'm gonna make it work somehow since i got the damned paper weight anyway...

It was at HardOCP (http://www.hardocp.com) that they fried the 1GHz T-Bird. Theyve since given it away as a keychain.

Ouch $70 for a heatsink, eh i'm still gonna try the lapping the gorb, but not planning on trying to kill the cpu..

The heatsink that I mentioned before is now installed and doing a very good job!
The design is excellent,the cooling ability exceeds a Gorb,and it cost me a total of $20.00 (2 day shipping included)
Current temp on my Duron 600@900mhz is 49c\120f.For a Duron or Tbird this is considered excellent at stock speed!
Considering this is at 900mhz,I rest my case!
