hmmmm IM not sure if any of those games are the best games ever. I like GTA3.... decent graphics ans sound...the gameplay is good, its a revolutionary game in freedom, and what you can do. And best of all, the replay value is high...which is good for someone on a budget...it has kept me happy for a long time...

Out of that list I have to give it to Unreal Tournament. Excellent balance of weaponry & awesome control. Actual best video game ever Xenogears for the Playstation. :D
The reason I chose those games is mainly because of the breakthrough they had for the genre. Yes, Quake was big, but it was Half-Life that made the engine. Doom maybe a bad game but it revolutionized the FPS genre, it put us all on FPS. Unreal Tournament was huge in the land of multiplayer gaming. The new Max Payne engine is a classic, especially in the graphical sense. The Age of Empires engine is now the the standard for almost all major RTS. Civ II, well, 'nough said. It is the greatest in history. And the Madden line, no more to be said. Easily the best sports line made in history. And finally, last but not least, MS Flight Sim. The king of simulations, the one that started all.
Without looking at the rest of the options, I choose Half-Life, Nothing can beat this amazing game ...

I still say it was Wolfenstein 3D that revolutionized the FPS genre.

Actually, Descent radically changed the FPS genre. It utilized 360 degree movement. Wolfenstein,Quake, Doom were based on running around on the ground. Descent gave FPS'ers the freedom of flight.

Decent may have radically changed the FPS genre, but wolfenstein 3D started the whole thing... :p

I agree. I wasn't arguing the fact of who was first, just pointing out a turning point in the genre is all.

I have to vote for "PONG", that was truly the game that started it all. Great graphics and unbelievable action. Hours of fun.

how can there be a best game ever poll without the almighty command and conquer?!?!?!?!

02-14-2002, 03:20 PM
As soon as I saw the Best Game Ever Poll, I knew Civ II was easily my choice, before I even opened it up to the the poll choices. I like shooters, but for some reason Civ II has had a place of honor reserved on my HD (on at least 4 different comps) since it came out... Even with the advent of CivIII (which, IMHO is too detailed and takes too long to play). Just can't beat it.

Not even a mention of Mech Warrior?
Well I feel that the best game is Tribes 1.
It is played on everything from a p2 233 to the best and fastest of today.
How many games can play on a setup as lowly as a p2 233?

I bought my first PC in '95. And then I bought a joystick at, of all places, Sam's Club. It was a Gravis Phoenix. With excellent programmability. And it came with a free copy of Doom 2. That's where I started. And I will never forget sitting at that computer til 3:00AM absolutely wired on adrenalin and playing DOOM. Half-Life is best for me, but where would we be without DOOM, and it's predecessor Wolfenstein 3D, which I never played but the way I understand it, was the start of it all?

Useless 1! You are correct! Pong started it all! I remember being 8 and thinking, wow! Is this cool or what? Can it get any better than this? Oh yes it has, and I'm loving every minute of it and more!

Hey, does anyone ever remember Questron on the C64? Wow, I didn't think I'd ever make it out of 9th grade. I went from a straight A student to a 1.9GPA because of that game! Then the Vectrex (sp?) box? Wow, let's keep the good times rolling!

Well, while the rainbow six series of games are great fun, the unreal series beats everyone. Unreal 1 gets my vote!

Geez! am I the only one who likes the MS flight simulator line! :p I don't really think there is "a" best game ever, but thats IMHO.

Has everyone forgotten donkey Kong? The game had it all, a savage, cunning beast for a foe, a beautiful dame and lots and lots of kegs.
Seriously, even though I think that the rainbow six games needed to be on the list, my all time favorite is Unreal Tournament. The only game that comes close will hopefully be Unreal II. Ghost Recon bears mention, if you like to run a half mile before getting to shoot the enemy--ultra realism though. Think, I'll play it.
man i played all those games and i think Mechwarrior is the best, real adrenalin pumper !
been @ it for 3yrs now :)

hmmm....
Hasn't anyone heard of Deus Ex? I think that should feature somewhere near the top... But from the list of choices given I'd have to choose Half-Life.
Still it's an impossible choice really - different smokes for different folks... And if you're going to go all soppy eyed and retro I'd like to mention a small rubber keyed beast going by the name of the ZX Spectrum... don't know if it ever made it to the US... If it didn't you probably never got to experience the wonders of colour clash!

I can't pick a favorite game as it depends on my mood. But some of my favorite PC games are Starcraft, Disciples II, and the HoMM series.

I like Quake3 but why nobody talks about Fallout`s?
Both parts where goooooood. (but first was better)
And what about Carageddon?
What about Earth 2150?
What about Elasomania?????:D
A poza tym nie to ladne co ladne a co sie komu podoba. And that is all truth.
I tend to think of several games that were 'innovative' enough to continue for years of playability as well as spawn many other similar games.
Wolfenstein, and later Doom, since they were the first FPS games and introduced the idea of multiplayer network FPS play.
The Wizardry series of RPGs, they started on the Apple II and are/were the standard for 'party of 4 to 6' turn based RPGs.
Rainbow Six IMHO was the first very well done tac ops FPS out there, and is still very fun to this day. Rogue Spear > CS, always :p.
Street Fighter, the original arcade fighting game, that started all the others.
Mortal Kombat 1, for introducing the idea of semi-realistic fighting simulations. Not literally realistic, but realistic in the player models and the slow movement/defensive nature of the game. Perhaps what I'm looking for is 'the first game of true skill' in 2 player fighters.
Quake 2, still a great game, the first good CTF mod, and still played. Go look sometime at how many Q2 servers are still out there ;).
UT, the dodge. Combine the movement of fighting games with a first person shooter, making a game that has lasted through two years of competition.
Ultima Online, the first graphical MMORPG that despite its limitations in the beginning has still survived, because the development team has kept it playable. "Make your own fun", a concept that got lost in alot of the newer graphical multiplayer RPGs that focus solely on eye candy.

Tekken I, II, III were all good because it opened the fight game up into a 3D arena. Mortal Kombat was cool, because you could kill your opponent after you beat their worthless butt. Pit Fighter was nice, but sooooo slow and boring, imho. Did anyone here play Mike Tysons Punch Out?

Its not just the game playability that counts it the way they built it and they way its all put together I still like making levels for halflife and inviting my friends round to play them its wicked :)

I've played Mike Tyson's Punch Out! That game was awesome. I played that game non-stop for the longest time! I even got the ROM for it so i can play it on the computer whenever I want. All my friends had it and we played forever. By the time I got to Mike Tyson, I was a little tired of playing and he would annihilate me. It was still fun and I still find myself playing it from time to time.

I always thought Pac Man sucked. If you want to talk about old coin op games, Crazy Climber was my game. I used to RULE on that game. I got an emulator and a rom for it for my computer, I can't find a controller to work it, it sucks with the keyboard. Man I feel old!!

You can't compare Half-Life to GTA3, if you take the games on face value I'd agree that Half-Life comes second, but my life wouldn't be worth living without Counter-Strike!

Donkey Kong Jr. rules................I probably put $7,000,000 in quarters in that game back in the day. Right now my favorite game is Dues Ex. I still play Starcraft and Warcraft II alot. I still remember playing Pitfall on the Intellevision for hours.

Half-Life for me. But it's really the multiplayer mod for HL, Team Fortress Classic. I can waste hours a day at that game, and typically log 5000 minutes on my main server in a month :o

I used to be hooked on Quake 2.I would play online for hours at a time. Now im hooked on Nascar Racing.I got my copy of Nascar 2002 a couple weeks ago on the first day off release.I have been up all night on several occasions racing online.I also just ordered a new Act Labs Force RS steering wheel, which should be here monday. My wife thinks im nuts, because I want to build my own race car cockpit to race in.She thinks im in some sort of pre mid life crisis. :)
Seeing how Im only 34 yrs old,I cant wait to see how much fun I have when I do hit my midlife crisis. :D

I chose Age of Empires (II), because I love that game, but...
What about all those great Lucas Arts adventure games. My real favorite would have to be split between four of those; Full Throttle, The Curse of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion II: Day of the Tentacle, and Sam & Max Hit the Road. These games were great. I have a 386b class computer set up with Win3.1 and Dos 6.0 specifically so I can play Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max. Those games don't play nice with current hareware and software. Anyway, I loved these style of games, and I'm really pissed about their demise as a major gaming style. That and the loss of arcade game popularity (the afformentioned Pong falls into this catagory) really pisses me off. Now it's all 3d FPS. Gimme a break.

Doom or Wolfenstine? While, Wolfenstine didn't survive to get a second episode(?). Doom did, true there was a remake of wolfenstine, and Doom3, but I think those are too far apart from the original to say they have as much in common as Doom and Doom2.
When it comes down to it, Doom! It was one of the first, but more imporntantly it has an EASY EDITOR. Easy, yet VERY powerful if you know what you want to make, and what you CAN make.
Besides, I prefer Dooms plot and changeing scenario over Wolfenstine. If my memories are in order, Doom graphics were also many times better. True, Wolfenstine claims the first 3d FPS, but I think Doom is what really set the trend.

There were a few wolfensteins. Castle Wolfenstein was not 3D (I think). Then Wolfenstein 3D. Then Spear of Destiny. And I can not find this anywhere on the net, but, Wolfenstein II 3D. I know this one exists because my uncle gave it to me when I was in third grade. First FPS I ever played. In the beginning it says to remember that Wofenstein 3D is freeware, but Wolfenstein II 3D isn't, so don't distribute it.

hey logan_85
if memory serves correctly, wolfenstein 3d did have a relatively immediate sequel.
"spear of destiny" or something. as i recall there were mutants and stuff to fight while you searched for the spear they used to pierce Jesus, kinda lost the feel of the first one. probably closer to the nazi/supernatural feel of the current wolf

oops, got impatient and didn't read renegadeking's post.
didn't id release all their early games in the episode formats?
i only had the demo of wolf 3d and it had 10 or 11 levels but advertised even more
10 levels, not that's a demo. not the stupid 1 level or 1 track demos they give out nowadays
half life has got to be one of the best games ive ever played!
A great new game is Medal of Honor Allied Assault.
