a friend of mine has a problem.
when he logs on to the net he gets disconected within a few minutes. if he logs on early in the morning he can stay connected for quite a bit longer (up to 45 minutes or so )
has anybody ever heard of this and/or know of a fix??
any and all help would be much welcomed!!
P.S. he recently changed to win. ME from 98 and has had the problem ever since.

ussually it just caused by the ISP.
you didn't mention about his PC. because sometime the speed of a PC involves the connection. for example if he is using a 56k internal modem be sure that he has at least a 200 pentium and 32 mb of ram installed, the rest doesn't matter

May be a coincidence as far as the timing of the problem on the OSes. I have seen this problem with dial up before. It could be a temperature/relative humididty problem. By this I mean, the ambient air temperature could be affecting the copper phone lines in his house, or the sub station. As the temperature rises during the day, condensation can have a dramatic effect on copper lines...especially if they are older lines to begin with.
Could also be the usage. As more people log on during the day, it just becomes harder to stay connected, or get connected at all. Or, as mentioned above, it could be the ISP's way of dealing with to many subscribers, and not enough modems to go around.

I usually start getting kicked off my connection from about 5:00 - 6:00 in the evening. I figure it is everyone getting home from work and checking their email. Before 5:00 and after 6:00 the connection is fine.

try to find another person who is using the same isp. is he experiencing the same problem ?
if it so, than it got tobe the isp. or if he lives near you the posibility of air humidity as mentioned above might be one of the issues. if not than think about this up ...
internet as you know creates a temporary internet files in your windows directory, this comes from the cache processing s ie or netscape require. if you're using v.90 56kbps internal modem such as 3com or d-link, the resources of the processor and motherboard are eaten by the internet activity, let say 20%, and if in the same your friend opens 5 windows explorer channels, you can imangine how hard the processor creates the caches for those sites. it is like using ms-word under 4mb ram, you get stuck...
or if your friend has a modem below 33.6 kbps, this could be also the problem...
try to log in at the same time on another day (like holiday). does he experience the same thing ?
and try not to log in when it rains, how long he can run the internet...
for your reference, i've made almost the question as yours in
