View Full Version : Old LAN games
Anyone suggest any older lan games I can play on a 166mx machine with limited video.I play Quake 2 on the machine with no problem and was looking for games maybe based on the Q2 engine or other twitch games with low requirements.Ive tried SIN but dont like it and Kingpin seems to be choppy.Any others out there that anyone may know of.Also looking for a good trivia game to play over lan with no luck.Any suggestions much appreciated...thanks in advance.

Howdy,
If you like war game sims, the Command and Conquor series is a blast over a network. Most any but the newer Read Alert2 sould be fine on "vintage" equipment.
Thanks for the info Toaster, more interested in FPS games but maybe I should try these for a change!:)

DOOM II!!!!!! Doom II works great on a P166. Warcraft II is a blast over a LAN too, and Starcraft will run on a P166.

Descent and DescentII. Both are DOS games. I run Descent totally resident in RAM Wanna talk about fast!!! And both games can be played on Kali. There are plenty of people still playing Descent and D2 online.

The original Diablo will have no problems running on an older system like that. It's not quite as advanced and pretty as the new Diablo II, but it's still a lot of fun multiplayer.

Duke Nukem 3D is a great one that my buds and I still play occasionally. I believe it is often found in the super duper discount bin for about $5

I second the Age of empires and starcraft, great lan games for older machines.
Hi DoGG,
It's got to be SIN!!
A highly under-rated and amazing game. As a multi-player, SIN is fantastic! The first release of the game was riddled with bugs that led to a massive split in Ritual and total disinterest from the public in an otherwise brilliant shoot ‘em up. Subsequent patches and the add on pack (wages of SIN) were simply superb, but by then the game lost it’s following. A real shame. The hover bikes in Wages of SIN are brilliant fun!
The ID BFG in Quake III TA is based on the Quantum Canon first used in SIN, but the SIN Quantum Canon is better! - it is unbelievable fun!!! It is a real multi-player gun! You can see the panic on players faces when you pull the trigger...ha ha! ( There is enough time for them to try and run away! He he!).
It’s based on the Quake II engine, but is better than Quake II.

Have to disagree with you there fred, the BFG was first used in Doom, which definitely came out before SIN.
Yep you know I've played most of these games at one time or another but I guess it just took hearing them again to jog my memory:)Spent way too much time on Duke but can't remember if there is a free look option in the game as I used a game pad in those days.Doom 2 started it all off for me years ago and remember the first time a bud and I played over modem.Started at 6pm and the next thing I knew it was 2am in the morning!Good ol' days:)

Yes, duke3d has free-look. If i remember correctly. Just played it a few months ago.
I think... but I'm not sure... that Heretic II could run on a P166. After all, it's based on the Quake II engine. Fun game, too...
