During the night, there have been two posts from people who have used Windows update and afterwards have had their CD/DVD drives disappear. The reason for this is, in the drivers section of Windows Update there will be posted "Intel IDE Driver" and if you use an AMD processor and a Motherboard based on a VIA chipset YOU DO NOT WANT TO DOWNLOAD THIS UPDATE! If you download and install this update it will replace your Via 4 in 1 drivers and make the CD/DVD Drive inaccessable. If you have already downloaded and installed these drivers, you will need to go to www.viatech.com and download the 4 in 1 drivers from the downloads setion to your desktop and then install them. This will solve the problem.
To prevent problems in the future, never ever download the hardware driver updates listed on the Windows update site. Use this site only to download the security patches to Windows and IE or for the Windows add ons. For hardware driver updates, always go to the hardware manufactures site and verify that these drivers are for your hardware before installing them.

I have gone through it before and it is not a fun time.
That is is why I would suggest not using Windows Update.
Not all of us want are machine to run what "Big Brother"
wants us to run.

I have lost my DVD, CDRW, and Zip drive as well. I have a Dell Dimension XPSB with an 800mhz Intel PIII. Do i need to download the file referenced in your post or do i need to do something else?
Lemme know.

Your system uses an Intel chipset so you don't need to go to the link that morriswindgate mentioned. That's only if your motherboard uses a VIA chipset.
What you have to do is uninstall the Intel Mass Storage Driver update. If you look through Start> Programs you might find a new entry for the new Storage Driver. If there is one, look for the uninstaller and click on it to remove the new driver.
If there isn't a entry in Start> Programs, check Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and see if there's a entry there for the Mass Storage Drivers and remove it from there.
If you can't find anything, go to the Intel website and see if there's any help there.

Thanks!
I ran msinfo32 and used the Update Wizard Uninstall to remove the update and now everything works fine.
Thanks again.

Good one morriswindgate! This is bound to start passing through my shop soon and it's great to have the heads up on stuff like that.

This happened to me right after I downloaded the Intel driver update in Windows update. I couldn't figure out what was happening --- "MY Computer" did not show my CD Rom Drive, but my CD ROM Drive was showing in my "devices", so I "removed" the cd rom drive and rebooted. The system "detected" the new hardware after the reboot, installed drivers, and all seems to be working fine again. Do I have to worry about anything else??? I do have an Intel Pent II with an Intel motherboard...

Now I've run across that before and was usually able to solve the problem by installing TWEAKUI. The drive would be hidden and could be unhidden with TWEAKUI.
