Your sound card is one of the three ESS oddballs that must be set up differently. Most distributions do not catch this. (I know, I have two of these oddballs myself. The three oddballs are the ESS1868, the Solo-1, and the Maestro series. I have the ESS1868 on this computer, and the Solo-1 on the computer that I use in college.)

To set up the ESS1868, you have two options.

First option: use the drivers in the standard kernel. You must do this correctly, however. First, you must compile all sound driver options as MODULES. Second, you must use isapnptools to detect the card before you load the modules. If you do not know how to do this, consult your distribution's documentation or the Kernel-HOWTO. If you do not know how to use isapnptools, consult its documentation or ask me. :-)

Second option: use the ALSA sound drivers, which can be downloaded at http://www.alsa-project.org. Follow all the instructions carefully.

Good luck, and if you have any more questions, please ask.

The sound card was setup in a module whsn I ran sndconfig (or at least it says it is loading the "sound modules" when I boot the system. Would I have to run isapnptools once before installing or each time I boot?
The books that came with mandrake are very general and sometimes seem to leave steps out. As for the E-books that come with the system I always find it's like pulling teeth to use them for troubleshooting. I guess I'm going to have to pick up a GOOD paperback so I can flip through the pages as needed. By the way, I looked in a Redhat complete guide Which was about 4 inches thick and didn't see anything about the type of video problems I was having.

I also think it says it is running isapnp befor the modules load.
I appreciate the suggestions and will check them out.

One more thing that I need to figure out. The card I have in my PC was Identified aby Windows as an ESS 1868. It seems to work fine in Mandrake, it passed both of the sound tests during sndconfig, and I can play CDS. HOWEVER (ya knew it was coming), I can't get the Microphone to work, When I go into the volume control area that is the only device that is grayed out. As I said it plays CDs fine in KDE haven't tried sound in Gnome. Also, when I try to attach a sound to an event, I can't hear the sound (when I run test) even though the system seems to be running it. When the system boots, I can see where it is loading the sound module and it doesn't report any errors. Any ideas??

earlier in this post I said the microphone volume control is grayed out... I meant to sy it is RED while all the others are gray.
sorry
