Your sound card is one of the three ESS oddballs that must be set up differently. Most distributions do not catch this. (I know, I have two of these oddballs myself. The three oddballs are the ESS1868, the Solo-1, and the Maestro series. I have the ESS1868 on this computer, and the Solo-1 on the computer that I use in college.)
To set up the ESS1868, you have two options.
First option: use the drivers in the standard kernel. You must do this correctly, however. First, you must compile all sound driver options as MODULES. Second, you must use isapnptools to detect the card before you load the modules. If you do not know how to do this, consult your distribution's documentation or the Kernel-HOWTO. If you do not know how to use isapnptools, consult its documentation or ask me. :-)
Second option: use the ALSA sound drivers, which can be downloaded at http://www.alsa-project.org. Follow all the instructions carefully.
Good luck, and if you have any more questions, please ask.
