monitor - colors are weird

Honest, Jim. This time it wasn't my fault. I booted up & shazaam.

My monitor looks like I have a filter over it. The colors are grayed. Brite red shows as dark, murky burgundy, almost black. Brite yellow looks green yellow. The artist in me says too much blue in everything?

O/S -Win 98
Display driver -Rage Pro from ATI Tech

What I've done so far:
--Fooled with contrast & briteness
--Device Mngr shows no problems
--Display, Advanced Settings- default button for ea. color
--Ran disk for Win 98 Recovery (reinstalls Win98 without formatting the HD)

That last one was a disaster. Montior looks the same & I have to reload all my programs. Hope this turns out to be something simple (crossed fingers, toes, and eyes)

First probable problem, loose video cable. Check the back of the PC. Unplug monitor, and look for bent pins in plug, (CAREFUL!!! Don't try to straighten them by yourself!) Plug it back in securly (don't torque on the screws though!)
Second less likely problem, broken wire inside video cable, replace.
Third even less likely problem, monitor needs degaussing, take it to a TV repair store, and tell them you want it "degaussed". They'll know what it means, and probably do it for next to nothing.
Fourth possible highly unlikely problem, monitor is toast, replace.
