Alright I have my DSL comming in through PPoE. So manually have to set my connection if I reboot my pc. Well I want to hook a router. My question is how does a router push it self to make the connection? I know that might be a stupid questions but I dont have a clue. Do I have to call my provider to enable some kind of Router capability on my end or what? I am going to hook up a Cisco 2514 router. I know how to configure that but I just don't get the other part. Hope somebody can help me.. thanks

Hi mrlucifer,
As soon as the router detects the modem connection it will automatically "send" the login and password info and connect you. You don't have to make any changes to the DSL line.

I've never used the Cisco router you have, but my Linksys router has a setting for PPoE, and another for Keep Connection Alive. I just put my user info into the router, and it keeps the DSL connection on at all times.
I do not believe that this model Cisco is a PPPoE DSL sharing router. You will need something like the Linksys BEFSR41, and connect your existing DSL "modem" to it.

CompUSA has a cable/DSL router with a built in 4-port switch on sale for like $59 this weekend. It was an SMC unit. Just FYI.
