I have two computers connected to a router, one is running W2K the other ME. Both machines can access the internet just fine, but i can't go from one to the other using my network places/computers near me, i get a "workgroup not available" message. The C drive on one machine is shared and i would like to access it from the other one.

How do you check/organize workgroups?

it's in network neighborhood properties in ME
I not sure about 2k I was just working with 2k
pro on a laptop but I think it was in the advance
tab were it gives you the option to change the
computers name and set the group if you look
around you'll find it

Not sure about W2K, but you might go to control panel and open system. It's located there under the tab "Computer name" in WIN XP.

In 2000, right click my computer then hit properties. From there go to network Identification. From there hit properties, it should be the bottom button. The last field in that menu is workgroup.

Hope this helps!

ok thanks now all computers are on the same workgroup and have distinctive names. But i still can't access the other machine from "computers near me" even though i can manually ping it with a DOS command. What's next?

Make sure windows login is your primary network login, then make sure all machines are a logging in at startup (so that Me doesnt auto login to default user)

sometimes machines will not see each other at first so you have to kinda help them. Right click on Network Neighborhood and select search for computer. Enter the name of the other PC. When it finds it you can then access its files. Good luck.:)
