Modem/Sound Card Conflict?

I've got some kind of conflict here.

Zoom pci modem is on com 3. Sound Card is SB16. When I download email and the "email notification" tune starts, it stops suddenly and the computer locks up. Also, the "Microsoft Sound" (default start-up sound) won't play, even when I test it in the sound control panel. The other sounds test out. Music CDs play OK.

OS is 98SE

Ron - check the SB16 resources. If it's ISA, I prefer it to use IRQ 5, DMA 1 and 5, IO 220, 330, and 388. Your PCI devices should all be up on 9, 10, and 11 except for the modem. If it's a PCI soundblaster, make sure you enable LPT IRQ sharing for the dos emulator.

Yes, it's ISA, and it's currently using IRQ 9, DMA 1, 00;
I/O 240, 0300-0301, 0388-038B.

Uncheck the box that says Use automatic settings - and scroll through the basic configurations till you see what I posted. You may also be able to change individual settings by clicking on them and choosing Change Setting.

I'm not at that computer right now, but I think I know what I might have done wrong. A few days ago, I was having a problem installing my modem and you told me to "disable com2 in the bios and delete com 2 in device manager". I just realized that I disabled com 2 in the bios but I did not delete it in the device manager. Maybe that's the problem? I'll have to check it out this evening.

Ron,
If you can't change the resource settings manually, you may have to swap slot for your sound card or modem, maybe both, until you end up with no conflicts. I had to do this to get my network card to work.

Smoke - That works for PCI devices but this is an ISA sound card. I have installed several of these late model Vibra's which default to IRQ 9. This raises hell with PCI cards and manually dropping it to IRQ 5 and the other settings indicated above takes care of that.

As I remember, you may not be able to get it to use DMA 1 and 5......1 and 0 is fine. The IO addresses I indicated are SB 16 standard.
