Modem problem once again

What setttings or are there any that need to be adjusted if the modem disconnect by itself after connecting to the net. Usually the modem disconnects after about an hour on the internet. Modem is a motorola SM56 pci software modem on a Celeron 500 system. TIA

Hi,
I'm sure that there are settings etc to help you. But personally I'd dump the Motorola. I would respectfully say that it's a POS.

I use both USR and Lucent modems and have never used a Motorola. But I've read enough bad press on it to convince me that it is just BAD.

Go out and buy a good Lucent modem. You have the CPU to run it with no problems at all. Make sure, though, that it's retail and not OEM!!!

Other than that get yourself a Diamond Supra Express ext.

Fredwest still isn't a hard modem worshipper since he had good luck with a LT Winmodem http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/wink.gif, but for 99% of the computing population, a Winmodem isn't gonna cut it.

Get yourself a Supra Express, either External (model 2730) or ISA (model 2720).

Fastest modems made, even got me to put my external USR on E-Bay when I got my Supra.

I agree the Motorola is not a good modem, however it's for a client and he does not want to spend the money for upgrade unfortunately. So I will put in the setting that reboot suggested and hope for the best. Thanks people.

For what this client is paying you to screw with his POS modem, he could buy a Supra..........why can't people understand this?

Hi guys,
I am not anti-HARD modem. My USR is an ISA HARD modem complete with jumpers etc. It's great but my Lucent is just a tiny bit better. It so small that it'd be like splitting hairs.

Soft modems are not a problem on modern machines AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT OEM. I have to say this because OEM soft modems suck. However I paid nearly US$60 for my Lucent RETAIL and it's no problem. With an IDT C6 Winchip @ 225 Mhz & 128Mb RAM it has never taxed my system.

THIS PC, however, uses the USR. I still haven't tried the Lucent in this baby but I'd bet it'd do just as expected......GREAT.

Please note that my telco lines are 'clean' and fully support V90. This does help.....A LOT!

Again I defend the Winmodem because you get what you pay for. Buy Dell etc and you get screwed. By retail and have a 'meaty' system you should have no problems..

Umm.. is anyone gonna try to help Eggo-boy? I personally don't know of any settings (read about my modem probs), but I've seen a lot of suggestions along those lines in the past. I don't think he wanted to start a ****in' contest over what's the best modem. Like most of us, he doesn't ask a question unless he needs some help.

Only thing I've found for Motorola's is give him v34 and send him on his way.

If he's only getting v34 anyways it doesn't matter much.

I was just kiddin ya Fred, don't sweat it. I agree. A retail LT Winmodem is usually fine for someone who just wants to net surf from their house. As long as it doesn't have to go through a phone switch or doesn't need gaming speed, it'll be fine.

But, I will point anyone who had success with Winmodems over to this thread at 56k.com, about halfway down the list, where this person howtodo? posts his ping results...

As you can see, higher initial connect speed, but at a price of 500+ pings? What DUN says is RARELY the case. Pings and Tracerts on the other hand, don't lie.
