help me please on novell in general

Right i recently went to an interview and the guy asked me what exp i have had with novell. I have had diddly squat. of course i tried to blag it a little however my lack of knowledge getst the better of me.

So bascically what is novell and what does it do. i know vaguly that it is an OS. but what the differences..pros...and cons?

ive checked out the site. But am i right is it an OS. or is it a program that is run. If it is an OS is it only used within net works. Does it then support MS programs. could it be installed on a stand alone. The site gives a lot of information but not for total ignorants of novell like me(although im trying to correct this)

It could be an OS, but what i have done with it, is our co. uses it on Windows 95, 98, and 2000, to log into a network.

Novell is a Network Operating System [NOS] and is used in a client/server network [as opposed to the peer to peer networks that most people setup in their home]. It is installed on a computer [server] and that computer cannot be used to run your typical applications ... all it does is the task of being a server. The other computers [clients] need to have a client software installed. Then, when the 'Win9x' boots up, there will be a login screen, username and password are entered, the win 9x client PC then has access to some files/folders on the server. It's possible to limit certain folders or other areas of the server to some users depending on their rights. Novell is used for very large networks ... ex. 1000's of users would not be uncommon but could be used with as little as two users ... even one for that matter ... although that would not be likely.

Yep ...
all the data from the users could be stored on the server, that being backed up every night ... if their computer went missing overnight, they would still have their files. Not only that, if they used another computer on the network, they would still have access to those files. Users can run apps off the server if they wanted, the network manager could keep his/her install files for the client PCs on the server for quicker installs [necessary when the clients do not have a CD-ROM drive], where it's necessary to have users share a folder or files, that can be arranged, etc
... basically. :)

so could t1010's and t20's be used easyily with novel?

There thin clients.....net pc

I am not fully positive, but I do not believe a thin client will work with Novell
