Dirty mouse

i have a regular ms mouse - but i find that the rollers where the mouse ball is gets dirty quick and therefore my mouse starts performing erratically!

is there any way to clean these rollers properly - at theh moment i just scratch them off with my finger http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/frown.gif

You can use a Q-tip moistened with alcohol (not Crown Royal-hehe) to clean the rollers. When you use your finger to clean them you leave skin oils behind that catch and hold dirt & dust.

I used to suffer from this problem really badly. I think it's the type of mousemat I was using, one of those smooth surface ones that seemed to attracted dust and stuff.

Anyway, the cure for this (for me) was to get one of the new IntelliEye mice - it really is a good as the hype. I find it far more accurate, and of course doesn't need cleaning. I even threw the mouse mat away - I use a piece of card as the 'mouse mat' (glossy table srface isn't IntelliEye friendly) which is easy to replace when it gets grubby.

Give it a try.

Hehe, you should my mouse, my 3 year old likes to run it through whatever he is eating for lunch. One day he had a Little Debbie brownie for dessert. Needless to say, I take it apart and clean it every day. I also find that tweezers work the best.

My mouse used to require cleaning every couple days. I finally got extremely annoyed and threw it against a wall so I could justify the expense of buying the IntelliEye ... I love this thing.

If you want your mouse to stpo getting dirty, you could try getting a different mouse pad, well, this one is a mouse rug: www.mouserug.com (http://www.mouserug.com) . They say that the fibers on it clean the mouse as you use it.

You might consider cleaning (if possible) or replacing the mouse pad, which can built up with oils and dirt from your hands.

I suggest you to buy an optical mouse.
With my old mouse I had the same problem. The mouse got dirty very quickly. I had to clean it very often, but it got dirty again.
Since december 1999 I have the MS IntelliMouse with IntelliEye and it's still working without losing any performance.
My advice: Go with an optical mouse. It's really great.

I agree about the intelimouse. I use the Intelimouse Explorer and it is GREAT.
There are numerous options related to the mouse and as said - don't have to worry about dust etc. They are not cheap, $95 in canada but I think its worth it.

If it gets to be a pain then just 'bag it and tag it'. Mice are cheap but I hate the DELL mouse pad that I have now. It seems to attract 'blobs' of dirt for some reason..?

The best thingto do is to change over to an optical solution. I'm using a Logitech Trackman Marble. One of the first optical mice ever and it has provided years of trouble-free service. I opened it up one day to take a look around and found that there are three little nubs that hold the ball up and they were caked in crud. The mouse never missed a beat, though.

If you absolutely can't buy a new mouse then do the following: Take the mouseball out and wash it with soap and water. Make sure to rinse all of the soap off. Scrape the crud off the rollers and do the Q-Tip and isopropyl alcohol (go to the pharmacy and get the 99% stuff - rubbing alcohol has oils in it to aid in lubricity and these stay on the rollers). Either clean your mousepad really wel with soap and water or get a new one, they're cheap.

The normal intellimouse w/ IntelliEye is only about $30 bucks at my local Best Buy.

Hmmm, I'm gonna have to try one of these.

The biggest problem here is if you're a smoker, like I am. There's no way to keep a mouse pad clean as a smoker, and the roller just attracts that ash from the occasionally "bumped" ashtray.

Bout time someone accomodated us for a change, we been gettin kicked in the teeth for years...
