CD Drive stops Win95 boot

help guys!!...(as always)

I was tweaking and I set DMA for both my CD Drives (one a 52x Creative the other a ?x who knows what very slow but nice n quiet). These show up as Mode 4 and Mode 3 respectively on boot up in the POST screens. They were working fine before together. The creative as 2nd master and the other as 2nd slave. I noticed somewhere, maybe file system, it said some devices were operating in MSDOS compatability mode so I tweaked the CD Drives when I noticed DMA was unchecked. OOPS! After reboot it hung after the 1st splash screen cleared (Win 95b).

I tried to change it back in Safe Mode but no go, the box was already cleared. I removed both drives in device manager but still no go. I unhooked both and it booted fine. I hooked up the 52x and win detected it and booted fine. Hooked up the other and it hung, same as before. I unchecked DMA for the 52x and tried again but still no go.

What's going on guys, how do I fix this stupid thing?

I realy like the old drive 'cause it's dead quiet and fast enough for most stuff.

Trouble is too I have some apps that are looking for it to be there on drive H:

I'd realy appreciate an assist with this one.

Uncheck DMA on both of them. Try switching master/slave assignments.

Thanks glc, I tried that with the 52x that I could get to work but it had no effect and if I hook the other one up it wont boot except to safe mode which already has the DMA box unchecked. Do you have any other suggestions?

No other suggestions except to try a different drive in there.

From my experience the two or three versions of 95 don't play nice with newer CD ROM drives.

I had the same problem with 95 and my Kenwood True X CD drive, as well as my Promise RAID card.

IMHO, not worth the headaches. Get your hands on 98SE and be done with it.

Thanks again gld and Xayd, I'll just keep hammering away at this little nut 'til I crack it. I understand what you're saying Xayd, but they were both working perfectly before I screwed with the DMA setting, now I can't change it back for the problem drive cause I deleted it from my device manager list and with it hooked up I can't boot. It seems like Win is remebering that last time it was hooked up DMA was set and so it's going to use DMA still. Why oh why oh why can't windows be more transparent!?

This maybe a dumb question but would a registry hack be a possible solution. Where does win store it's hardware settings anyhow?
