CD-RW Re Writable disk

Hi

I have just purchased an Hp 8250i CD-Writer Plus which is my H: drive. My G: drive is a 8x CD ROM.
When I copy files from one of my hard drives to a CD-RW Re Writable disk I can only read it from the H: drive and not my not my 8x CD ROM which is G:

Am I doing something wrong or is this how all CR RW copiers work, or just the HPs?

CD-RW isn't always compatible with older drives. My old CD won't read CD-RW either. If you wish your old CD drive to read cds made from your HP, use CD-R discs. The down side is they aren't rewritable but they are recordable (read your users guide about the difference between the two media). However they are compatible with lots of cd drives.

CD-RW's are not constructed the same as a CD-Rom or a CD-R. If you take a look at the CD-RW, you will notice that the reflection is rather dull in comparison to a CD or CD-R. This is due to the different chemical composition of the CD-RW that allows it to funtion as it does. Unfortunately, this makeup usually will not work in older CD-Roms or CD players. This is why most recording programs will give you a warning message about recording music to CD-RW's. Since your CD-Rom is only an 8x, it probably isn't good enought to read a CD-RW.

If you want a CD-ROM drive that will read the CD-RW's make sure it is muti-read compatible(sp?). Almost all new drives are these days. A good basis is 32X and up. Some even say "Reads CD-RW's" on the box. Just in case it bugs you as much as it bugged me (I bought a new CD-ROM the day after buying the burner).

If you are copying files to the CD-RW using DirectCD format, you need the free Adaptec UDF reader software to read the RW in a regular CD drive. Your 8X may still not have a powerful enough laser to read them though.

If you are doing packet writing on the RWs (DirectCD) then there is no reason to read them on any drive other than the burner. If you are just using the RWs as a learning aid to cut down on coasters you will probably stop using them after a while anyway. Most people do. No need to buy a new CD-ROM just for that.
