View Full Version : Conextant 56K PCI modem = no dialtone
I have installed a conextant 56k pci modem in
my Intel Celeron 400mhz, 96mb ram. All
indications are that this modem is installed,
no irq conflicts, and it passes the Windows 98 SE test. Any attempt to use the modem, however, ends up with the error "No Dialtone". I have checked the line by installing a telephone into the jack and the line appears to be fine. Is it possible for the analog line to become corrupted where it would allow regular phone calls but not support a modem? I lost my @home service last week when the end of our street had minor flooding in the Texas rains. @home had to boost my signal and will be checking all cabling to determine the problem. The phone connections are in the back of the house and the garbage truck driver sets his sites on it every week. He ran into it again and now it is loose in the ground. This may also be a mote point if someone has experienced this and knows what it could be. Thanks.

The "telephone" port would work even if the modem card was not installed in the pc. It's merely a "jump-off/pass through" from the incoming telco line.
You either have install probs or jewelry.
Try uninstalling everything (modem and/or enumerator), remove modem, disable com2 in the bios, let it re-install itself. This might take a couple of shut-down/start-ups.

I did what you told me to and I am still not having any luck. Everything says that the modem is fine, but it cannot detect the dialtone.
I am also going to plead ignorance here in that I do not know what the word "jewelry" means in your context.
Thanks, Jo-Ann
Well for jewelry purposes, I think he may be referencing the plan (after getting a hard external modem) we had over at 56k.com for a PCTEL HSP user.
I.E. desolder the chips on the card, make new age jewelry out of em, and send the card to file thirteen, after getting a real modem.

What happens if you use the phone dialer or hyperterminal? If this works, your pc and modem are on same page. If won't dial on ISP connect, be sure this modem selected (if more than 1 on pc) as the one to use.

A couple of things you can try. Go into control panel, open up the modems applet. Click on the diagnostics tab. Click on the port that has your modem on it. Click on more info. Tell us what that says. I have a hunch you may get a port already open error or something. I'm not sure how to fix this, but I've run into this problem before. Anyway, if that's not it at all, then maybe it's a problem with the wire you are using to connect the modem to the wall jack. Do you have two lines in your house? If so do they run out of one jack or two?

Well, I'm off to go look for myself. If I should get back before I return, tell myself to wait for me.

I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. I haven't seen that type of jewelry yet but we could probably make some up and sell it to a nonselective customer base.

Keith, the ENIGMA
You are right about getting the port already opened. Phone dialer tells me that another device is using the line. HyperTerminal just gives me an error message. There is only one telephone line to the house since my regular PC is on @home. Something that I noticed tonight was that there were two devices assigned to IRQ 10, 11 and 12. There was one each for the modem and one each for a PCI Steering Wheel. I don't know how to get them out of there except to dump the whole thing and rebuild it, which I'm not fond of doing.
I'm not sure if that is what is causing the problem. The steering wheel hasn't been used since late last year, before my husband passed away. The modem had been in my PC and worked great. When I put it in his, that's when I started having this problem. Do you think rebuilding the PC will be the easiest fix? I built both of the PCs so I know what a rebuild will take. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Thats PCI IRQ Steering, not a steering wheel. Those are supposed to be there.
Uninstall your modem and remove COM2 from device manager. Disable COM2 in CMOS and reinstall the modem.
I've tried removing and installing this modem for far too long. I keep getting the message that "The selected line or address is in use by another program or device on the line". I can't find the other program or device.
I've had it. What are the odds that another internal modem would have the same problem? Right now, I'm firing up the soldering iron.

Very funny Scotty. Now beam me down my clothes.
Diamond Supra Express 56i, ISA, problem solved.
Retail 79 bucks, check pricewatch, maybe cheaper somewhere else if you get OEM.
Faster than the equivalent USR, and cheaper. Even my USR externals found their way onto E-Bay after I got a Supra. Best modems made IMHO.

Hi jag,
Have you any fax or similar software running in the background? If so it may be holding the modem port open and this will stop any other app from using the modem until the port is freed up.
Just a thought..?

Fred, you beat me to it...
What she can try is pressing ctrl alt del at same time. If RNAAPP shows up, something is tying it up. By selecting "end task", then trying modem, you may have a clue.

Thanks to all of you. I tried everything and still had no luck. I decided to use the overkill method. I cleaned the hard drive off, reinstalled Windows, then reinstalled all the other software for video, sound, etc. Went to Fry's, bought a new modem, and now I have no problem. I got so carried away using all of my old modems, one each from 9.6, 14.4, 28.8, 33 and 56, that I now have a great new selection of new age jewelry. Watch for it at Christmas time at your local Family Dollar Store. Thanks again to all of you for taking the time to help me.
