I'd like to install all the components from an IBM Aptiva into a larger tower. Does anyone know if the motherboard will fit into a regular ATX case, or do I have to purchase a case from IBM?

Most aftermarket cases have several mounting holes for differant form factors, so I would say that this is probable.

Your IBM is a "proprietary" machine and many, if not most of these, have special power connectors from the power supply to the motherboard. Check this out and see if IBM's plug is a standard ATX, or if it's different, in which case you're out of luck.

Yeah, I'm outta luck all right with IBM and their damn proprietary hardware. The power plug fits the MB but the motherboard doesn't fit the case(too big) and they reversed the configuration of the PS2 and keyboard ports with the USB ports on the removable faceplate on the back of the computer.
Does anybody know if there is some kind of 5.25" drive bay device that could hang beneath a 3.5" bay? The problem I have is I want to install a second cdrom and the hard drive is taking up the second bay, being 5.25" in size. I'm sure I can purchase an external bay for the cdrom, or install and reload a 3.5" hard drive, but I really didn't want to have to go that route. I suppose I could buy a larger tower case from IBM as well. Any ideas?

I'm not even sure if you can buy a new case from IBM, afterall they really don't want you to upgrade too much, instead they want you to buy a new computer.

Anyone see a problem with mounting the hard drive on the floor of the tower case? It'll fit there, I just don't know if it's wise.

a friend of mine had the same problem with the 5.25" hdd, finally decided to get a 3.5" drive in order to get a cdrw
as for the back plate, i'd just hacksaw or dremel it into compliance
i wouldn't mount the hdd on the bottom because you might have problems with overheating due to a lack of airflow over the drive
just an uneducated opinion
