video overlay question

ok, its been posted b4, but i still dont have an answer :P.

my dvd drive wont play dvd's because 'the video overlay is not available'

this error occurs in power dvd and ati dvd player, the only 1's i use. exact same error in both.

any ideas?

usin an ATI Radeon 32 DDR,
1.2 t-bird
ecs k7vza 1.0 revision
512 sdram
sound blaster live 1024
12x reliasys dvd rom

and the regulars which should make fek all difference.

Searched for same error message and found one - but I don't know if the solution is related. Might be worth a look...

And then there is this:

Overlay already in use by another application;
If another application, which makes use of overlay, is already running, the overlay feature of the graphics card will not be available for use by the ATI Video Player.

Common types of applications, which may use or prevent access to the overlay feature include;

Video conferencing software
DVD playback software (such as the ATI DVD Player)

Video editing software (such as the ATI Video Editor OR the ATI Video In Feature for RADEON VIVO graphics cards)

Please close the application using overlay and then re-start the ATI Video Player. In some instances, your system may need to be re-booted prior to attempting to re-launch the ATI Video Player in order to ensure that overlay becomes available for use.

I've got a partial answer for you.
You need to run System File Checker. You get that from System Information after you click on Tools in its' menu. What it will do is check for any damaged or corrupted files and, using your windows cd, repair them.
I had a similar problem to yours and I had a damaged dll file.
In my case it wasn't quite enough and I'm now using WinDVD along with ATI ( hey, it works ) but it was the first step to getting my DVD back.
As far as I know, I have the Radeon that you do, PowerDVD is trouble. The only thing running it with Radeon got me were Ddhelp errors.

That was a great find.
I tried the multimedia install directions from that web site and it worked perfectly. No more cobbled together solution for my DVD and I now know what to do if I ever get hit with this problem again.
