MSI 645 ULTRA temperature problem

I recently purchased MSI 645 ULTRA board, and PIV 1.6A processor and everything else. Since I am overclocking this setup, it was important for me to know the temperatures of cpu and etc. However, after reading many posts at other places and MSI's forum, the temperature sensor or whatever of the board is broken, and there is no way to tell the temperatures accurately. In bios, the temperatures always stay at like 30C, and using speedfan or some other software, it will always stay at like 50C.

I was just wondering if anyone has this board, or knows a way or a utility that will give the accurate temperature readings.

You'll find the P4 to run quite cool actually.
It seems Intel overestimated the amount of heat the CPU would produce in normal applications. If you are using the boxed fan/heatsink I would assume all is well.
If however you crank up the core voltage, you would be wise to keep tabs on temps.
Of the 3 P4 builds Iv'e made (Asus boards), the temps always stayed below 120 degrees(f) even when pushed quite hard.
I am unfamiliar with you particular board. It sounds like an i845 chipset board.

I think he has the new MSI board with the SIS 645 chipset that has gotten very good reviews on many benchmarking sites.

I would say that your sensor is not broken as most pograms from mobo manufacturers have trouble indicating the actual temperature from the BIOS. Many use MOTHERBOARD monitor as this proggy is probably the best and it's free making it a better choice. HTH

Ah...I see.
Iv'e been watching the SIS chipset but have to say that SIS's past scares me more then a little. Old habits die hard I spoze.
Any ways, most Intel processors have an upper "working" limit of about 180 degrees(f). Some system boards load the CPU in a differing mannor.
At this point I'd try to detirmine actual temps.

I actually did try the motherboard monitor, but seems like it doesn't really work either. I actually went into the forum on the MSI website, and everyone with this board, and everyone who knows about it tells that the temperature sensor or the way it measures it is messed up....and that MSI has no fix for it...or at least not yet.

Other than that, it is an awesome board for the price. I bought mine for $74. It allows FSB change in 1Mhz increments, from 100 to 200. Also it has alot of options for overclocking.

I have 1.6A ghz P4, and I am at 133MHz, so that is like 2.12 GHz. I can boot into windows2000 at 150MHz, that is 2.4GHz, but Prime95 will give me errors. I haven't tried anything between 133 and 150, but I just stay at 133 since it is stable and all I aimed for is above 2GHz.

It's just that I wanted to check the temperatures since I did the wire trick to up the default voltage and since I am overclocking. But I just ordered the CompuNurse temperature probe, so hopefully that will help measure the temperature more accurately.
