just got a new cd-rw ,dont know any thing about one ,do i need to buy cd with the same speed for recordig, sa my cd-rw is a 24x12x40x.thank you all.

All the popular cd brands will work with your 24x.

Try & get cd's that have 24X on them. Your burner will prolly do an auto detect & step down to the speed of the cd in the tray. No fun tho to burn @ 8X when the price for the 24X are the same, eh?

Buy Cheap media, it works just fine. TO protect the write suface be sure and apply a label. Here is a couple of places to get it from that I have found to be very good

Burning CDs is more related to the Black Arts than science...or, so it seems at times. Making a few coasters in the beginning is normal for the game. It's how you find out what works best in your system. Your total hardware configurations has more to do burning that people would believe.

I have older units, as do most people I know. The same software behaves differently in different computers. But, maybe, buffer underrun compensation on newer burners takes care of a lot of problems.

Don't be afraid of using on sale media. It can save you a lot of money. Anything extremely important should be backed up more than once! In over fifteen years of owning PCs, I've never found any difference between generic media and namebrand. I found no difference in floppies. I don't find any difference in CD-Rs.

With the newer burners, if you do burn a bad disk the problem will be with the files you are trying to burn and not the hardware. If you do get a bad burn change the burn properties to TEST then BURN to determine which is the bad file.

Just a quick question. In the book that came with my CreAtive 52X it says to be careful of buying low quality CDs as they may come apart if cracks are present. What do they mean low quality? I have an HP 9150i CD-RW and have been using the Imation 25 packs, that I get at Wal-Mart for a good price. I do see the 100 pack of no name for real cheap though. So am I being snookered? Should I buy the 100 packs instead? I don't use more than a few CD-Rs to back up my files and web site each month. I would like to know the truth though. A penny here and there adds up.

Imation is fine, I've used 'em with no problems. I've also used PNY, Memorex, and Cheepo CompUSA cd's with no problems. I look for sales in the Sunday paper and my purchase is based on price. My advice is to just stock up with a 100 spindle when you see a good buy.

Brand is not as important as noting the speed ratings as has already been mentioned - unless you want your nice 24x burner to burn at only 4x or 8x.....

I caught a sale on TDK 24x media on spindles and stocked up. I wouldn't buy media for your drive that's not rated for at LEAST 16x.

Like anything else, beware of the rebater scam. Be sure the price you give the merchant is an amount you can live with should the rebates not come. Right now, I'm not hurting for any blank CD-Rs. I won't put out more than $10/per 50 right now. That price is straight up, no rebate necessary. With rebates, I'll go $20 if the whole purchase price is refunded.

I don't think I've ever made a coaster due to the medium. Usually when I spit out a coaster, it means that burning on the fly isn't going to make it. I have to use the CD RW drive for both source and target.
