Just built a new computer. ASUS A7V266-E MB, Western Digital 30GB Hard drive, 256 MB DDR memory. ASUS CD/RW Drive.

Went into BIOS set up to boot from my CD/RW with Windows XP Home version in the drive.
Windows Setup, comes up at the top of the screen and files start to load. So far, so good.

Then next screen comes up.

"Welcome to setup

-To set up Windows XP Now, press Enter..
-To repair a.....
-To quit........

I hit enter and it continues.

Next screen shows 28624 MB unpartioned space, and I press Enter to set up Windows XP on the selected item. I use the NTFS format. It gives me the option of FAT, or NTFS, Has two options with "Quick" after the option. What's the deal with that? I just chose the regular NTFS format... It does its thing.....

Then it says, this portion of setup successful, and then reboots the computer....

So far so good.......

"Windows Setup comes back on,
loads more files......

Then the bottom of screen says Set up is "Starting Windows" and sits there for a long while.

This is where the problem starts. It says, Welcome to Setup. This portion of the Set up Program prepares CP to run on your computer.

To set up Windows XP Now, press Enter..
-To repair a.....
-To quit........

If I hit enter, it starts the same process again. It askes me to select a partion to install in on, now showing a partition 1, which has what it just did on it. If I choose this, it warns me it will delete the OS already on it.
It just repeats itself. What is going on? Why doesnt's it continue to the point where I have to registar my name ect.... and start Windows?

P.S. If anyone would allow me to call them, or call me, I would appreciate it. Describing my problem in the forum is hard to do. Would be easier to talk with someone.

Ain't it great to set the thang to auto, & now forward to the operating system:) The first part you mention is for the hard drive to be partitioned & formated. If you remember the dos fdisk way this was required: first partition, reboot to dos prompt to set the partition table. Second format /s to format the drive with system files so the drive can be seen, reboot to the dos prompt to set the formated file allocation tables. Third install operating system. Well the new winxp does this all from the cdrom, kewl, eh?
So it will take about 75 min but be patient, just keep selecting enter/ok forward man your almost there!! No you don't want to call me @907 coz I'm in Alaska & will cost you plenty! Tho I get'um from america some times:D

Rancher,

The problem is, it keeps coming back to the place where it wants to format over what it already formatted and placed files on. When it does this, when I hit enter, and keep going, it deletes files it put on there before, and starts all over. Something just isn't right.... It shouldn't be deleting anything shoud it? Does that make any sense?
See , when it gets back to the point where its says hit Enter to install Windows XP, the now partitioned part is highlighted. When I hit enter, it warns me that the Stuff on that partition will be deleted. What's the deal here?

Have you installed Windows XP Home yourself? How many reboots should it do?

I'd be happy to pay for the call Rancher.......

Not to be a smart-ssa but I would recomend you read everything before you do anything. XP will walk you right through everything you need to do.

PS: you have not followed the directions to install XP, sorry to be rude.

SpyCatcher,

I bought the XP Home Version OEM. Don't have anything but the disk. Thought it would be an easy install, just follow the directions......

That's the problem with this business, there is never enough instructions, or should I say clear instructions.
If you know something I don't, I'd appreciate the info......

After talking with Rancher, discovered the installation was probably going O.K., I just didn't give it long enough. I was thinking it was doing something wrong by deleting over previos files. I will try again in a few days and let it keep going......

radar_1_2000,

I just went through what you did on a buds Dell laptop. I did a fresh

install of a slipstreamed XP Pro SP2 and it took me about 1½ hours to get it

in and do a few simple "Tweaks". The reason that I stopped at those few

tweaks is because I whipped out my copy of my Ghost 2003 boot CD and

made an image of his C:\ to his E:\01_Ghost folder I made and to a CD-R.

See: http://royaldiscount.com/synogh20fuve.html

See: http://nightowl.radified.com/bootcd/steroids.html

See: http://ghost.radified.com/bootable_cd_dvd.htm

Having used Ghost since 1996, I know how much of a "Bacon Saver" this

proggy is. Just for the hell of it, I reloaded my boot CD and had Ghost

overwrite the fresh install I just did. It was, in essense just replacing

what was on the C:\with the same thing. The restore from the CD palyer

took 54 SECONDS!

From now on, every time my bud does a software install he's happy with,

all he has to do is make a new Ghost of the C:\ so his butt is covered "just

in case". AND I deactivated his "System Restore" so his C:\ will stay a LOT

smaller from now on, since his Ghost Images are his "new" System Restore.

Just my 2¢ worth.

One mistake often made (and I have done it) When the system reboots after the initial files are loaded and the boot screen say hit any key to boot from CD DONT cause the will start the process all over again...
