XP with Lucent problem

Let me start by saying that I think that this is an XP issue. I have installed a Lucent (Orinoco) wireless USB device in a machine that has XP upgrade installed. The device manager says that the device is working properly. I installed the XP driver from Orinoco. The device installed correctly and is seen in the network control panel. When the device is first plugged in( 3 seconds or so) it sees the wireless network and shows the signal strength. Then it all goes downhill. The network control panel suddenly shows no connection available and the link to the network is lost. I have checked the wireless device and it is functioning propely on a different machine (W2K). I have installed many of these on XP machines, but this is the second installation on an upgrade version. The first installation on an upgade version did not go well, but eventually worked. One last thing, the machine often gets the dreaded blue screen when rebooted with the device attached, and the blue screen goes away when the device is removed.
