View Full Version : Logitech Optical mouse USB problem

I recently bought a Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse 2x Optical USB or PS2.
It runs fine in the PS2 port but when MS somehow recognized that it was made to use the USB port for added features 2x speed & accuracy. It wanted me to use the setup wizard to set it up for the USB.
I started by not reading the instructions :( Ok so when I pluged it in the first time to the PS2 port, and installed the CD Drivers everything was working fine. Until I rebooted, then windows said it had found out that the mouse, could run on USB. Just turn off the Computer and plug it into the USB and the wizard would pickup where it left off.
No way and no mouse. I wrote the company and was told to install another 2 USB ports. They said that the 2 on board usb ports might not be giving the mouse what it wanted. When I built this Computer ABIT included 2 more USBs, PCI opening, wire to MOBO type. So I have 4 and tried them all.
Now everything that it says the mouse buttons and internet wheel will do does work as advertized. Is 800dpi going to do anything more for me to worry about over 400dpi? I have not tried to hook up a mouse to both USB and PS2 in order to get around and see if I can get it to work in the USB by using Add new hardware. The Logitech tech did say that the Mouse had a mind of it's own and it was under warranty, so return it. If anyone has run into this and found a way to get it to work on USB, I will sure give it another try. If not I paid $10.00 for a nice blue mouse, that has a 5 year instead of a 3 year warranty and works as well as the less expenseve mouse.
I know this doesen't make much sense so I will just ask. Is this worth the time and trouble seeking 800dpi over 400dpi? I don't even know what dpi means and I just love the fact that I can throw my mouse ball cleaning kit out. This mouse is the like gliding on ice. Thanks Pulsar

I have the same mouse and have never had any of the weirdness you are describing. But, I NEVER, under any circumstances, install mouse software. You just don't need it for anything. It is big and bloated and half the time, it makes your mouse NOT work!
I would recommend uninstalling Logitech's mouseware, and restarting your computer. Then just plug the mouse in USB. Windows will find it, and install a "USB human interface device". Your mouse will then work just fine, without Logitech's bloatware!

Thank You Jenni
I will do just that. Should I uninstall the Logitech Mouse in Device Mgr & the Ps2 with a yellow ! both under Mouse. The PS2 with a yellow ! is not showing a confiict. It may be left over from my Genius net mouse that I still see in boot as bad command.
I have tried to remove the PS2 with yellow ! but it's back after restart.
I also bought a MS internet key board. Yes also installed the CD. If I read you right, it is better to just plug it in first, and only use the Drivers that came with it, if Win 98SE can't find a driver for it. Am I close?

Hi plusar454,
I gotta agree with Jenni: never install the mouse driver that came with your mouse, it's usually not worth the hassles.
I use the regular Logitech Optical mouse in the PS2 port and I love it. No more cleaning the ball and rollers...it's great.
Not sure what you're asking about the Internet Keyboard though. Is it a USB keyboard? You may have to enable USB Keyboard in BIOS.
I like things simple and really don't like to install and have things running in background unless absolutely necessary. I find I have less problems that way.

Hmmm, I think the PS2 mouse will stay as long as you have your PS2 mouse port enabled. No big deal really. If you want to use the mouse USB, and don't like the yellow !, then go into your BIOS and disable the PS2 port. If it doesn't bother you, leave it alone.
Yes, the best policy for KB's and mice seems to be to plug it it, and let Windows search for drivers. If it has internal drivers for it, they seem to work best, without all the bloated software the CD's usually install. You will undoubtedly need CD drivers for your internet KB to work correctly though. I dunno, maybe not since it is a Microsoft KB.

No Cricket, it is a PS2 is what the instructions say. I just thought that if it was better to let Windows and the many built in drivers it has take care of your drivers needs. Well since this is a MS keyboard maybe it would be better to do the same as with the mouse. I believe I am geting the point on the Software that comes with our hardware.
First it seems that it never comes with just the drivers. When I installed my HP printer it had this program and that program with it. My Zip and Scanner the same way. This is the Bloat you speak of? Am I getting close? Can I do this with the other hardware I have? Uninstall the software and let windows find it? Then if not give it the diskette or CD.
I have read many times, that the leaner & cleaner that you keep your Computer the more reliable it will run. I thought that something was wrong, when I got a jukebox program with my printer. The wizard goes by so fast that you tend to think, I had better say yes, or it wont work.
I sure am learning a lot here I can't thank you all enough.

You can't really do that with things like scanners and ZIP drives. They need the software that was written for them to work correctly.
KB's and mice generally don't need any "special" drivers. You can plug your KB in and have it work just fine, but an internet KB needs a special driver for all of the "buttons" to work correctly. Without the driver, it works as a regular KB, but the extra buttons don't do anything.

Hi Jenny, Cricket
Well I tried everything I could, but no go. Now when I talked to the Tech Help at Logitech, she giggled and said at one point " Our mice seem to have a mind of there own" Well I don't think a mouse has a mind, and what's most important to me now.
It the Mouse has no dirty ball. But to be honest with you ABIT has had a slew of usb problems. All 4 of my USBs work well, if I didn't mind that my Mustek scanner, and external 250mb ZIP never worked as well as my new internal 250mb ZIP or my Astra Parallel port Scanner.
What I mean is Logitech is well aware that some peoples Computers will not run that mouse on usb or they would not have put the PS2 adapter in with it.
Don't take me wrong I believe that all some people have to do is plug allmost anything into their Computer and it just pops right in. I allways have trouble installing hardware. You would think if it were just me, that just once I could get it right when it asks. Have own disk? I have never gotten past that point, I put the disk in an play, Ok, Ok, Ok, until I shut down out of frustration.
Boot up put the CD in and pray that it self starts. If it does I win and follow the wizard until it installs.
Ok just the facts: I uninstalled everything Logitech. I shutdown. I pluged mouse into usb 1. Boot up and watch the cursor. I tried this on 1.2.3.4. USB ports. I installed both mice 1, in USB 1, in PS2. I put a mouse into PS2 because it was getting old real fast, only having the enter button to navagate.
I then went to add new hardware. It was there, optical mouse so I clicked on it and tried to let windows find it then, I tried to find. These are some of the things that went on. Put in CD 98SE, C:\windows\temp\CDminstall, hidserv.exe could not be found, Error code1FB, Windows did not detect a mouse. then at one time a blue bar came from the right side and said , you have a message from Logitech. I was hoping Logitech
At this point right now, I have a functional mouse and 1 program in my add/Remove programs (MouseWare)not the 4 others that were in there before.
I have a fairly logical mind so here goes. Both ZIP & Scanner never worked as good on USB as on, LPT & IDE. Logitech sells me a mouse with a possable 800DPI but includes a PS2 adaptor. I still don't know what 800 DPI in your mouse will do over my 400 DPI. Now who in there right mind would put this adaptor on their new mouse to run it at 1/2 the rated DPI? Why would Logitech let you have an adaptor that made there product half as good as it could be? I am so frustrated at this exercise in Futility. I need to calm down and read a little about HTML and enjoy my new Mouse, that just hours ago I thought was the greatest new device to come out since the first mouse.
I am truly sorry if I screwed this all up, but I tried everything.

With USB things like mice, you plug them in with the computer up and running. That is the beauty of USB. You can plug and unplug stuff with the computer running. Try plugging it in with the system running.
BTW, I have an Abit ST6 MB, and I don't have any problems using the USB ports. I have the onboard USB hooked to a 4 port hub, and have my mouse and a joystick hooked to it. I never hooked up the other USB's because I didn't need them.

Why would Logitech let you have an adaptor that made there product half as good as it could be?
That's not uncommon, as many people still have computers that don't have USB ports. Many peripherals have connectors that work with either USB or PS/2 port, or USB and a joystick port, etc. It's not because they don't expect the USB not to work; it's just so more consumers with older computers can use them.

I dont install the full package that comes with peripherals, but i do install the basic driver, even for mice (so i can set the function of the middle button). I dont install from the cd, i downloaded the latest drivers from their web site.
With USB devices, even though its hot swapable, in both the directions for my mouse and web cam, it was very clear to install the drivers before you plug the device in. I believe it has something to do with keeping windows from messing up the install if you plug it in with out the drivers.

I was looking at the IRQs today and noticed that all my USB hubs share #11 IRQ with my NIC card. Could this have been the problem all along? I really hate not knowing why.

No, that shouldn't cause any problems. USB devices don't even have to have an IRQ. Some things, like printers and scanners, work better if they have them though.
I would try this: remove anything Logitech installed. Restart your computer. Let Windows load. Then plug in your mouse to the USB port (it is NOT a good idea to plug in PS2 mice while the system is running!). Windows should pop up the "new hardware found" box and ask for your Win98 CD. Put the CD in and let it grab the drivers it needs. In your Device Manager, you should now have a listing for "HID compliant mouse" under Mouse. Your mouse should work fine then.
Unbelieveable - why don't you just use the nice Logitech as a PS/2 device? You don't gain ANYTHING that you would even notice by using it as USB, and the PS/2 mouse port is there for a mouse! Save your USB ports for USB-only devices!

Well, when I had 98, I liked using mine USB beacuse it freed up the PS2 IRQ for use by something else, and I could just unplug it and plug it back in if I needed to. Other than that, no reason not to really, but it is frustrating to have a simple thing like a mouse install go haywire and not be able to figure out why.

Hi Jenni
This is exactly what I did on the Compaq , and it worked just as you said.
I have tried everything on this post on my Computer to no avail. It was only when I used the other Mouse on my Computer, in the PS2 port that I could get around to add new hardware, and saw that HID had a problem. It had 2 hardware devices listed. 1. an Optical Mouse and 2. a Keyboard I clicked the mouse and it came back with a driver that it found.
Then when I said yes to install the driver, it started to load then came up with an error 1FB and said this device had a problem. The only reason I mentioned the IRQs is I have read of people having conflicts with to many things on or the NIC card needed to be reassined to another IRQ.
I uninstalled everything Logitech, and even did something I have never done. Deleted all the shared files that said Logitech did not need them but another program might.
Each time I have tried to get it to reconize the mouse on Boot, the Mouse will give off a flash like it is trying to find it.
I tried all four USB ports with the External Zip and evertime it takes it and it works. If you remember, the Logitech Tech said it was under waranty for 5 years so I called and told the MGR of the Staples Store that I bought it and he said just send it back to Logitech. He also said he would not even consider exchanging a product, that worked on PS2 and he had run into this before, and said the problem was My Computer, and not the Mouse.
