A friend of mine asked me if I would help him update an old PCI Pentium. When we looked into the tower and the manual, we find we are looking for a processor labeled as P54C..... What does that mean?? I have been shopping for a processor on the web and haven't seen a single one mentioned. Is it the socket?? and is anything else compatible to it?? Thanks for any help..

The P54C pentiums are NOT MMX. The P55C Pentium MMXs are dual voltage, and it sounds like this motherboard won't support them. I think all of the retail places are only offering the 233MMX as their bottom end pentium right now. A place called Compgeeks (www.compgeeks.com) has the 166 and 200 mhz non-MMX chips, but I'm sure you can get one cheaper somplace else.

P54C is just the p75 to p200 chip version. Intel then went to P55C (duh). They were used in socket-5 and socket-7 boards.

Thanks WJW;
So if I get a P166, socket 7, it will work, (after I set the jumpers), right?? BTW, what is a ZIF socket.

Zif socket is where the chip goes.. it has the little lever on the side to lock the chip in place.
About the only place to find the older/smaller chips any more are computer shows or independent shops. Most all you can hope to find will be pulls.

The board MIGHT be able to run an MMX processor, what board is it?
