On re-starting our school's server, it came up with this error message:

"[server] has lost communication with the UPS"

I'm assuming this means that if our power goes down, the UPS isn't going to do its job.

The cables seem to be tightly connected, lights are on on the UPS. It has a new battery. What should I be checking? (I'm leaving on a week-long vacation on Monday--I need to get this taken care of ASAP!)

Does it communicate if you open the monitoring software? If so, don't worry about it. If not, check the serial cable for security and check the software configuration - make sure it's looking at the correct COM port.

If this is an apc ups and u got it freshly installed you want to select the ups at boot of the monitor tool.
It's doesn't always by default connect to the ups at startup.
Don't have it running on this box so i can't check where the option is hidden, thought it was under file>server but not 100% sure.
If that isn't the problem then forget this post =)
