sql field?

I'm contemplating building or "enhancing" a sql based progy that I use...but field names and so forth are obvious. eg. city is "city" soforth...can you use these as they are since some are proper names like "birthdate" or "client".

I realize using the existing architecture would be, by all rights, infringment... but what about fields?
