I was wondering how to get out of Safe Mode. Using Win98, I inserted a CD-ROM game I had used before but the machine wouldn't play it correctly and after trying a few things to get it to work, the OS reverted into Safe Mode everytime and even choosing Normal Mode after booting up doesn't get me back running, it wants to stay in Safe Mode. Is there a way out of this?

Boot to windows then START > RUN type MSCONFIG click OK and then set it to normal STARTUP restart and this should get it working

Thanks. Problem is, I can't get to Windows and mouse being disabled during safe mode, I can't even use the flag on the keyboard to get to the Start menu.

Select Normal mode, but hit Shift-F8 (I think) to get a step-by-step startup, when it asks you if you want to process config.sys, say NO, same with autoexec.bat. If this works, when you get in Windows, run msconfig or sysedit to find the offenders. I'm guessing that somehow some real mode drivers got loaded that Windows hates.

OK here is what you have to do - Start you computer - as soon the screen comes up and initalization is on press and hold CTRL key on the keyboard - this will bring you to MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98 START MENU on the DOS SCREEN - select using the number pad or the curors - COMMAND PROMPT ONLY - then press enter..

you should see this one your screen
C:\>

Now type

SCANREG /RESTORE enter - select the oldest date on there - then hit restore - restart and you should be up to normal again..
