hey there,
i've got a strange prob. i'd installed a game, then uninstalled it cuz i thought it was causing some probs for my comp....now i'm not so sure. whenever i use the live update from norton, it goes about 1/4 way, then freezes. the real strange thing is none of my other programs work after. not even windows. a total melt down. even the tower won't shut down properly. i ran a file checker and the file N32USER.DLL came up as corrupted, but i didn't know how to fix it, so i just ignored it for now. everything will work once i'm finally able to reboot, but it takes some work to reboot. but if i try the live update again, it happens all over again.
i'm really confused, i hope maybe someone can shed some light on this.
thanx in advance.
I would start by uninstalling Norton and Live Update using add/remove programs, then reinstalling.

I actually did uninstall and reinstall (sorry, should have mentioned that). I cleaned it completely out of my computer, from the registry, windows temp files, ran it thru the find files and deleted everything associated with the norton and symantec. When I reinstalled it, the live update worked. Then when I tried to run it again, it just went back to it's old tricks:( .
What was the game? Was it one you could play on-line? Sometimes on-line games install spy-ware, so I suggest checking for that.

Well, I think I've figured out my prob. It's a rather strange thing, actually. Whenever I open norton systemworks, and try to access Live Update at the top of the panel, everything freezes and won't work. Strangely, if I open the Anti-Virus control panel and access the Live Update from there, it works. Go figure. I assume something's corrupt, but I can't find out where. And as long as I don't access the Live Update thru that one particular button, everything's fine. So, I appreciate all the help. Thanx.
Seems like that game must have something to do with your Norton problems. Sometimes uninstalls are not complete. When you uninstalled the game, it might have left files that Norton also uses, but that are not compatible. Of course figuring that out would probably not be too easy.
It's probably a long shot, but you may want to check the game makers support site to see if any problems with Norton have been noted there.

I would format and get anything but Norton. Fixit is my fav but there are any number of others. I have heard that Norton will kill your comp before it lets go of it. Just some thoughts
Blak - I've been using Norton AV for years now with no real issues - but I agree that the rest of the Systemworks is pure bloat. You want to talk about an AV that won't let go? Try McAfee sometime - that's instability in a box.

Can scandisk help fix the corrupted files?

I personally have used Norton AV, but not anymore. Windows XP and Norton 2002 (States it will work with XP) gave me nothing but problems. I now use Panda (my opinion a very good anti-virus program) for all my computers now.

Heee hee instability in a box, that is rather good glc!
I have not used/played with anything but Nort and Fixit.
What do you think about pccillin? That may be an alternative for sweet Kassia.
PC-Cillin is supposed to be one of the best. Actually, the free AVG from Grisoft is a very decent package. It only has 2 downsides - both related to updates. They don't update as frequently as others, and you have to download the whole signature package (3 megs or so)instead of a small "cumulative" update like Norton. If you are on broadband, the latter is no biggie, but it can be annoying over dialup.
Is Fixit still using Esafe?

Nothing came up on any spyware search, nor was the game manufacturer able to help. I have to assume the Tiberian Sun game has caused the prob. The game can be played online, (though I don't use that function).....but that has to be the link, cuz it's interferring with Norton's ability to access it's update downloads. Not only does the game mess with Norton, it messes with Windows too. After playing T-sun, Windows will freeze during shut-down. :(
In regards to Norton Systemworks, I have to agree with you guys, all the extras are just a waste of memory space. Norton anti-virus may be a pain in the butt, but I tried McAfee and didn't like it. Don't know about PC-Cillin or Fixit, or....I think it was... Panda?? I've never tried those yet.

For PC's that I care about, I give them PC-Cillin. The 2002 version even comes with a firewall.
