if you are on a shared ethernet you could go to a switched network. here is the discussion on hubs/switches: http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/000215.html

however, standard network speeds (even mildly congested ones) are still far faster than the 128K isdn line is capable on bringing data into the network.

Your LAN isn't the limiting factor, your internet connection is. If you are going to a T-1, you will have all the bandwidth you will need. The T-1 is still slower than your lan connection. With only 12 machines on the network, i doubt that you will have traffic congestion problem. However like the previous post said, you can go to a 10/100 switched ethernet lan.

Set up a proxy server and make them use it. You keep your connection as is.

Do you want to limit their access or take more than your share?

Are you a user or administrator.

admin no some of them r using more than there share and I was wondering is there any way to slow them down because the will start a huge download in the morning and do it all day download after download but they use the internet for work every day so I can't just take it away

MP3 files are compressed and take up a lot of bandwith. Send an email to all (memo) that they can't download MP3 files in your time frame. Set up proxy server (if necessary ) to track the offenders.

If you are on an NT network and have a DNS server - make static mappings in the DNS to any MP3 sites you find in the cache. Point them to your own web site with a warning.

If you're using a proxy, you'll want to force them to only be able to connect through the proxy. You could accomplish this by utilizing packet filtering on your firewall. That way, only packets destined for the proxy server will be allowed through your firewall.

Just a thought.

yea that would be great but there are some problems with that
1. we are not on a proxy
2. we are on a peer-to-peer network

If you're on a peer-peer network than you will not be able to regulate them for downloads as everyone has equal rights in the network.

What kind of files are you downloading. If it is apps you can use some utilities that splits up the file to parts and download from every mirror site it can find than combining the parts again into a whole.
