Networking Trouble

PCI or ISA network adapters? If ISA, you probably need to run the DOS configuration so that the card settings match the settings that Windows has assigned.

I've been trying to get two computers networked through a crossover cable. The computers can see themselves in Network Neighborhood but they can't see each other. I've installed all of the appropriate protocols and I know these things can sort of communicate, because I goofed up and installed ICS on both machines, which led to both machines griping about identical IPs. Still, I couldn't get net diag to work, nor would ping recognize the new IP of the other machine. One thing I notice is that the activity diagnostic light on both network cards flickers almost constantly.

Can any of you guys help out any?

Under the identification tab (network neighborhood) are both PC's in the same workgroup?

Yes, I made sure to give both the same workgroup name.

Uninstall ICS and all networking components. Reinstall networking but do NOT reinstall ICS till the network is up and operating with NetBeui for filesharing. Then you can configure TCP/IP and reinstall ICS.

Move the network cards around to different PCI slots till they are not sharing IRQ if you still have problems. Make sure your crossover cable is not defective.

They MUST have different Ip addresses.

What is IP address of each and subnet mask. If you are conserned about security change or use * on the #

Try to uninstall ICS on the client from control panel and install ICS on the host again take the floppy as instructed to the client

ICS should only be installed on one system all the others are configuration automatically through the floppy disk
Make sure that TCP/IP is installed and configured to assign IP addresses automatically on each computer on the home network

I'd like to say thanks to all of you people for trying to help me out. I've managed to get the network to sort of work.

Now one computer's Network Neighborhood shows both systems, however, it won't access the shared resources on the other system. The other system shows nothing in its Network Neighborhood. I discovered that if one system is rebooted, the other system's Network Neighborhood lists both systems on the network. On the system that shows nothing in the Network Neighborhood, I can do a search for it and it will be found.

You must be running a protocol on both machines that supports NetBios. NetBeui should do this, if it doesn't work, try IPX and enable NetBios over IPX. Heck...put them both in, won't hurt.

Yeah, I made extra certain both systems had their hard drives shared.

A couple of other questions, if you want to humor me. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/wink.gif Do you enter anything for the Windows NT domain under Client for Microsoft Networks when the systems aren't attached to an NT server? Can the other computer obtain IP address automatically or must it be assigned?

No, do not enter anything in the NT domain, and leave the 'log into NT domain" box unchecked.

IP addresses have nothing to do with either Netbeui or IPX. When you install ICS, they will take care of themselves.

Thanks once more. Do you know if a peer-to-peer network requires the setup of a master and a slave computer?

No, that is only necessary to use Direct Cable Connection. Peer to peer networking (using network cards and Ethernet cables) means all computers are equal.
