This is pry a stupid question but im new to networking so here it goes...

Right now I have my nice custom built pc and the rest of my family has a stupid compaq and we are getting cable internet soon. I want to set up a small cheap network with some 10/100 NICs and a 10/100 5-port hub. As i understand it, the cable modem will hook up to a NIC. What is the easiest way to share that connection? I know I can buy some router that I just hook up to the hub but those cost too much.

Thanks,
Adam

If you have Win98SE you can use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) and a crossover cable, you just need 2 NIC card for one of the pcs, which will act as a server for the other one. http://www.pcmech.com/ubb/wink.gif

I know, but I want a hub cuz I am planning to get another computer soon. And if I do the server thing, dont I have to set up a proxy? Would I need 2 NICs for my server computer one for the cable modem and one for the network?

If you are using the hub and no proxy (the way to go)them the cable modem will plug into the hub along with the 2 or 3 pc's. No need for 2 NIC's in any of the pc's but you will have to have an IP address for each one. Some cable companys are charging for exra IP's, some are not. I have @home and they are charging me $4.95 for the extra one.

Windows ICS will set up your proxy. Save you money from purchasing extra ip's if they're not free. Yes your server will have one nic for cable and one nic for your internal LAN.
