Slow Network!

For no apparent my network connection between 2 pcs has gone SSSSSSSOOOO slow. I have 10mb/s cards but transfer rates cannot be above 10kb/s!

I am completely clueless and cannot bring to mind any networking changes i have made to either system.

Can anyone out there with networking experience help?

As Always extremely greatfull for any suggestions!

Go into the settings of your network cards and specify the media type and speed explicitly instead of using "Auto Detect".

For example, you'd set your cards to run at 10Mb, Half-duplex, and UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair... it could show as "TP" also)

Sounds like your cards may be trying to negotiate higher speeds and/or a Full Duplex connection.

I'm sorry but I cannot find these settings anywhere.

I have looked in Device manager | Network adapters | Realtek RTL8023 Ethrnet Adapter and compatables | properites and also in Network properties | Config | Realtek blah blah and under TCP/IP realtek blah blah properties.

Any suggestions?

You are using a generic network card driver. Try getting the *exact* driver from the manufacturer's site.

I installed the exact drivers that came with teh NIC's and all they did was to remove all my protecals, services and adapters.

I managed to get the drivers working but still no luck with the speed.

Very Depressing...

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

How are they networked? cat 5 crossover - cat 5 with a hub....or coax? You might have a cabling problem.

CAT 5 (RJ45) Peer 2 Peer.

On saturday I will have another pc so I will able to match them up and try find the problem in one of the pcs, however I will be using the same cabling so if the problem is there...

Are you using a crossover cable or 2 straight cables with a hub? I have had crossover cables go bad - see if you can borrow one for troubleshooting. If you have a hub, are you getting "normal" light indications?

Its a cross over cable, no hub is involved yet.

I checked out our colleges IT department and they would not lend me any (They have plently spare, rotten buggers)

I friend Of mine as offered to get me some from another colleges IT department at which he helps out at, but I wont see him was a week or two.

I am clueless...

You can buy a crossover cable at CompUSA for 10 bucks. Use it to test and if it works, you got it made. If that wasn't the problem, you either have a spare cable or you can take it back for a store credit.

They say they ship to the uk. But I dont think they have stores in the UK. However Its not worth getting cable shipped over as from a local store I can get 15m Cat5 made up for only £7. I am sure your local stores can match this!
