sharing a cable modem

Hello, I just got a cable modem from mediaone (twin cities). They gave me a 3com homeconnect cable modem. To share the connection, i got a linksys cable/dsl router. The connection works fine when the modem is in its original setup (just one comp), but when i put the modem cable in the WAN port of the router, and the two comps in ports 1 & 2, the connection doesn't work. I hear a lot of people connecting through upload ports, but my cable from the modem won't fit. PLEASE HELP!!!

On my setup with a hub, I either had to use a crossover cable, or the uplink port on the hub for it to work.

I just got one a few days ago. I followed the directions and it worked perfectly. 5 minutes, fast and easy. Hope you figure it out. I hadn't heard anything but good things about the Linksys routers.

I use a normal Linksys router and NIC's. I have two NIC's in the main computer, and I use 98se's internet connection sharing. I works fine for me. I'm using software based sharing though. Just a thought if this doesn't pan out for you. Plus you can get a normal router for cheaper with ports for more computers. I have four computers on my network. The ICS works on all of them.

i connected the modem through the upload port, and now the original computer accesses the modem fine, but the second comp won't access yet. On the linksys page, it says you have to register your mac address with mediaone, does anyone know how to defeat this? I don't want to pay more.

theENiGMA, why are you using ICS when you own a router? I've been looking at getting the Linksys unit myself as a friend of mine has one and it works great as a firewall and a DHCP server. You should be able to string 253 machines off of that thing if it is the same one that I am thinking of.


Ryanjw, how are you configuring your TCP/IP?
