hey, i finally purged my old compaq of all of the comcrap on it and installed purely windows98. anybody know where to find a interwave driver? i think it controls the audio on this old compaq presario 8760. also, when i installed i didn't have the windows98 disk in when it began installing all of the dll's so when i put it in and told it to install them, it wasn't able to find any of them. i had to skip all of them. not sure if i'll need them or not on this old thing just for word and the internet, but i'd greatly appreciate any help with this stuff. thanks as always...

jca008,
Go to Google and type in your exact model. Many times, if the drivers aren't on the Compaq site, someone has them on a website just for you.

jca08,
I'm going out on a limb here because I don't quite know the details.
Did your Compaq originally have Win95? If so and you fdisked and formatted for Win98, that would mean you went from FAT16 to FAT32. At the Compaq driver site, there are drivers for your audio if you use Win95, but I don't think they can be used on FAT32 .
Someone please correct me if I'm incorrect.

hey guys, thanks for all the feedback, i checked the compaq site before, and it seems to be just a bunch of diagnostics stuff. i'd also searched on the web with no results. however, the site that dldz just posted does seem to have a win95 driver. you guys think i could use that in win98? i just downloaded it and will install when i get home. i gotta get to school, just had to hop on real quick before catching the bus. thanks everybody...

jca08,
I just went through what you're doing on a Packard Bell that originally had W95. I fdisked, formatted, and loaded Win98se. Everything went great til I tried to load the audio drivers. The audio drivers were on a W95 disc. Here's an idea. Redo the hard drive to get to FAT16, reload Win95, and then find a WIN98 Upgrade disk. You have the features of WIN98 but with FAT16. I'm thinking you can then load the drivers from your W95 site.
Just a thought.

Sarge,
Thanks for the good words.
Many years ago I was tournament bass fishing and didn't know what a pc was.
I sure hope the info I'm spoutin' here is correct though. I wouldn't want to steer anybody down the wrong road.

Old friend, I used to big-time bass fish as well, back before it became real popular. I had the original stick steering with 40 hp Evinrude. I knew every square inch of the lake, as I used to hunt on the land before they built a lake. I became, imho, an excellent bass man, then burned out. My problem is, according to HER, is I get interested in something, put everything I've got into it, master it, then move on. Hope I don't get that way with pc's.
:D BTW, SHE points out that I'm still with her, as I haven't mastered the situation. 28 years with the same woman - I still can't decide whether to fish or cut bait.

sorry it took me so long to respond, school's been pretty crazy lately. however, in response to your question for more details, here it is:
it's a compaq 8760, originally with windows95, included with this was a "Compaq Home Base" which was basically a very pretty logon screen where you could select which user you were and enter a password.
that's pretty much it i guess, i fdisk'd it (which was a royal pain in the butt, i had to create about a million boot disks, guess i'm a little new at the reformatting thing), and then installed windows98 onto the blank hard drive. i've downloaded the interwave driver recommended by dldz, and one of them seems to have worked but in the device manager there seems to be about 4 more unknown devices that i assume are related the the interwave sound stuff. oh, and the sound does not work by the way. thanks for all your help guys...
josh
Hummm. sorry to hear the sound doesn't work.. what is listed in devce mgr that you mentioned ? I'll keep trying :D

they're listed under "other devices" as:
PCI Multimedia Device
Unkown Device
Unsupported Device
Unsupported Device
i don't really know what they are other than that during the setup the only thing that i couldn't find a driver for was the Interwave sound thingy when windows98 was installing. thanks...

I had similar problems trying to install the interwave sound card onto a separate computer with Win 98. I finally gave up and bought a cheapie sound card at CompUSA. I think I have the original restore CD to that model. I'm not at my computer at the moment, so you'll have to bear with me. If you have an idea as to which files you would need to install, I could email them to you from the CD as an attachment.
Hey tranman thanks for the help with this I'm sure jca08 will apppreciate it !

You can also go to the compaq site and wend your way to the Forums & Communities. You should find a forum specifically for your model. These forums are frequented also by official compaq techies. I've found several *impossible to find drivers this way.
As here, you have to register to ask a question, but it's free.
incase you need the link

FWIW, I've had excellent results e-mailing the Compaq tech support ppl (E-mail (http://web14.compaq.com/falco/emailform.asp?origin=consumeremail)) while working on a couple of older systems. I think I've gotten a response overnight in every case. (The only bad part has been replying to their reply messages - no response there - only to new messages I've sent from the web page.)
My top driver source is to register at DriverGuide (I like the new beta version here (http://www3.driverguide.com/betav2.php)). You can search by the Compaq number for the card, by FCC ID #, for Interwave, etc. I can't think of a driver I've needed for ancient stuff that I haven't found there.
HTH...

i've got the restore cd, is there a way to find the drivers on there? i tried putting it in and pointing the windows98 driver installer to the cd to search it but it didn't find anything, i'm assuming they're packed for installation somehow. thanks for all the help everyone, but i'm starting to think i should just buy a new cheapie like tranman said. that compaq forum place is kinda a pain to navigate. thanks...
