I'm using Win98SE and something I did or something happened that changed the icons on all my programs icons and start menu icons, except the Windows specific programs. In other words, the Excell, Powerpoint, Word, etc. icons remain the same, but all 3rd party icons are the ugly M$ folders. The icons on my desktop all remained the same.
How can I get the 3rd party program icons back?

I thought at first, VIRUS, but all scans come up negative and everything is working as it should.

Thank you,

Carl

Carl,
By right clicking the icon (properties/shortcut tab), are you able to browse for a different one? I'm not sure if there is any way to do it automatically, but that will allow you to change them manually.

Carl, download TweakUI and run the Icon Repair tool.

Deadeye,
Since the M$ folder is the one I want to change, a right click doesn't give me a change icon option.

DR Z,

I'll d/l Tweakui. I thought XTEQ-setup had that tool but it doesn't, that I can find.

Thanks Guys, I'll let you know.

DrZaius,
D'l'd Tweakui and ran the icon repair tool. The only icons it wants to repair are in the Control Panel and they don't need fixin', just the ones in my Program menu.
I'm probably missing something, so I'll keep looking.

Thank you. I need Tweakui anyway. It has some nice options.

Carl,

Another thing you can try is to delete the ShellIconCache file in the Windows directory (it is hidden and a system file). After you restart Windows the icons should be back to normal.

DrZ,
No success yet, but I'll keep working at it.
