Write Protect a Hard Drive?

Can a hard drive be write protected in Windows Me?

I'm using a backup utility that came with my new Western Digital hard drive and it works great. It will clone an entire partition and write it to another partition perfectly.

The thing is, I made partition that I want to use exclusively as a backup drive, and I would like to write protect this backup partition so that nothing can be written to it while in Windows. Is this possible?

I may be wrong but in my opinion I don't think it is possible to write protect a harddrive or any portion of it.
