DOS Games in Win98SE

Hi guys,

Okay, after posting to mike breck's "Your Favorite Game Music" thread I went and found my old copy of Redneck Rampage and got a hankering to play it again. It's been a few years since I installed and played a DOS type game and don't know how to go about installing it in Win98SE. Do I make a boot disk and set it up for gaming (tweak config.sys and autoexec.bat for best memory usage) or can I open a DOS window in Win98SE and load it in and play it from there?

98 should be able to do it in a DOS window just fine.

Hi Cricket,

It rather depends on the game and how old it is.

Some DOS games like Blood (great game but a pig to get running)have be setup and run from the Command Prompt and others like Quake can be setup and run in Windows.

If the readme says it can be setup and played in DOS or Windows, then I would try pretty hard to get it running in Windows. It makes life sooo much easier.

BTW I haven't played the game but it may be worthwhile running a search for it to see if any enthusiast's sites exist. There may be 3rd party mods or patches available to enhance graphics, sound, or improve installation under DOS or Windows.

Thanks for the replies and info guys. Looks like I'll be doing a little more research before I can play "Redneck Rampage" again.

I found my old copy of Lucas Art's "Outlaws". Since it already runs in Windows, I'll be playing this one first. Just love playing these old FPS's...especially after a hectic day at work :D.

Hi Cricket,

Redneck Rampage worked fine in all my 98SE machines without a hitch. So did Blood and the others. Just edit the PIF and make sure you run it full screen, deselect that enable screen saver, and uncheck most of the Allow keys, like the the Ctrl-Esc combo. Uncheck the block that lets Windows tell the program that it is running in Windows. Also, just don't hit the Win key while playing. (I have or should have a Win key disabler. If you need it, let me know).

The only thing stopping me from playing the older DOS games is I recently did a clean install and installed the Audigy Platinum. I have to figure out how to get "DOS" to find it! Everything ran fine with my old Live card before I did the reinstall. Any tips here?

Well now you've got me going TwoRails.

I tried every trick in the book to get Blood working with Win95 and Win98 in my systems but continued to hit sound and uncontrollable mouse problems. However, I finally got it working in the somewhat graphically limited DOS environment.

However, you've whetted my appetite to give it another bash in Windows.

Any installation tips for an old gamer?

Learning something new everyday :D. Going to look into that PIF editing thing and give it a shot this weekend. I got other things to do tonight.

The last time I played a DOS game was with Win95B and I used a specially made boot disk to prep DOS just for games. Must have lost that disk.

Hi All,

The name of the Win Key disabler (while running DOS games) is:

DosWinKy

It didn't interfer with normal Win operations.

Also, when editing the PIF, go to Program>Advanced and make the appropirate checks so the program / games does not require DOS mode.
