HI, I am working on an older laptop computer. It is a Gateway
Pentium 150 mhz. I know it is an antique, but I am just trying to help a friend. This is the problem- I was just looking around in Display while in Control Panel. When I closed out Display, I received some kind of message that I did not pay much attention to. I believe it said something like a file is missing or corrupt. Now when I try to go back into Display, nothing happens. The other items on the Control Panel page come up, but not Display. When I ran a scan disc, it told me that there was about 200,000 bytes
in bad sectors. I guess that means the Hard drive is dying. Could that info. that was in the bad sectors have something to do with this problem ? Is there something like SFC in Windows 95 that I could run and maybe find the bad file / files ? Is there a way I could reinstall Windows 95 over top to fix the files that may be missing, or must I format, and start over ? If I did , would that fix the problem ? Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mike

Hi Mike12, Have you given this a shot ? If you need to restore the Registry using ScanReg's files with win95. try this simple fix, just open a DOS prompt and type C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND -- when you get into this directory, type SCANREG\RESTORE and choose from the files available to you... go back a day or so before you got the pop up,, Reboot to restart Windows. Please repost & let us know how you do .

Hi dldz,
I tried what you suggested, but I could not get into the registry.
I noticed that now I can get into Display after a reboot. There are 5 items to choose from after Display opens. They are as follows: Background, Screen saver, Apperance, Chips, and Settings. If I choose any of the 5 except CHIPS, everyting is ok. But if I choose CHIPS, and then try to close CHIPS, I get the following message "An error occured while Windows was working with the Control Panel File C:\Windows\System\Desk.cpl
at this point I can not go back into Display, but when I reboot everything is ok as long as I don't try to open that CHIPS again.
The reason I have the computer is that they told me when they try to save a document in Word, it locks up, and then they can not even get back to the desktop after a reboot. I have tried to duplicate the problem, but as usual everything is working for me. My advice to them if the problem reoccurs-is going to be to delete word, and reinstall. Thanks for your suggestion, Mike

Win95 does NOT have scanreg. It does sound like the hard drive is dying, time to start looking for a replacement.
