In the list of the software that is "registered to the registry" (according to the program RegCleaner) there are quite a few (okay, a bunch) that I can't figure out what they are. I'm hoping that some of you guys might recognize one or two and let me know what they are. Theres a pretty good chance that the listing is just different than what i would know it to be, as far as program name, and its perfectly okay to be there. However I do like to download occasionally and with piggyback programs and such being an issue, I thought I'd run the unknowns by you guys and see if we can place them and determine if its bad guy or good guy! Here are the ones I don't get:
Listed by author first, followed by software name listed;
unknown - ChainCast
unknown - DS_entry
unknown - CLR
unknown - Briggs Softworks
unknown - ActiveInstall
unknown - WebInstall
Animated Menus - Animated menus
Avg 6.0 for Windows - Settings
InstallShield - Cryptography
Intel - Indeo
InterTrust - DocBox
LeaderTech - Encore Reg
LeaderTech - PowerRegister
LocalAppWizard - Generated Applications, filter
LocalAppWizard - generated applications, MMDiag
Mindscape - BorderPlus
Mindscape - Shared
Preview Systems - Profile
SoftShape - ActiveSkin
Vibesoft - Ffs
Woi - O/i

Thats it. Like I said there are probably things That I'm just not realizing what they are, and I don't expect you to know them all. I figure they are probably connected to software that I have or maybe used to have. If you recognize even just one, shout it out! Enlighten me please!
Thanks a bunch

Have you ran a proggy like AD AWARE to check for spyware? Do a search here on the forum for the link and try that as a second opinion for the entries. HTH

Have you tried running to automatic registry cleaner in RegCleaner? It should remove unused and uneeded entries.

Adware (http://www.lavasoft.nu/)

RegCleaner (http://www.jv16.org/)

Thanks anyways, but yup, i have adaware already and have ran it. I'm not overly stressed that i have unknown evil programs though. I just want to know what they are and be able to identify them.
I did run the auto cleaner and these were what it left behind. But since I don't recognize them I'm wondering if I could get rid of them and be okay, ya know what i mean?

If you really feel the need to WIPE those files out get Eraser for free (http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/download.shtml)

Hi turbo24

Some of the entries are for audio software on your PC:
ChainCast - for streaming audio, especially net radio broadcasts (I think it can plug into Windows Media Player)
SofShape - ActiveSkin this seems to be part of WinAmp, to change the "skins" (appearance of the player)
VibeSoft - seems to be a java/C++ webservices provider

Some of the entries are for installing/uninstalling/registering software:
ActiveInstall - I think this is used by IE and DirectX updates.
WebInstall - seems like this is used by QuickTime updates?
LeaderTech - Encore/PowerRegister ...probably a 3rd party registering program that software makers can use, so they don't have to write their own
InstallShield- another 3rd party installer, very commonly used. I believe the software company is WISE. I think Windows comes with a copy by default.

And the others:
DS_entry ...seems to be a Directory Services entry. Possibly for TWAIN, access rights...possibly used by Netscape
Briggs Softworks..."encryption, calendar, graphics, file utilities"...possibly a file viewer used by Windows or one of your programs
InterTrust-DocBox ...this is an eBook reader
Intel-Indeo ....this is a video codec
Mindscape - BorderPlus/Shared ...these are from PrintMaster

I have no idea what the Woi - O/i entry might be.

And anyone out there tonight who knows some more about these, or the ones I missed: feel free to add/correct!

...Gary

EXCELLENT! Thank you so much for that info! Wow. Gary you sure knew a lot of them! I had tried to look up on the internet a bunch of them but what I saw I couldn't associate to anything that I had. (such as the power register one from leader tech) But what you said makes sense as to why its there. Thanks a bunch!
