View Full Version : PC Freezing at Bootup
Appreciate your assistance.
PC boots up to:
PCI Device Listing... (normal listing)
Verifying DMI Pool Data-Update Success
C:\>
C:\>
C:\>
After the three instances of the C:\> prompt, that is as far as it goes. The cursor is at the top left of the screen, not by any of the C:\> prompts.
Any ideas as to how to get out of this?

When it bbots up hold the CTRL key and you should get a screen with many options. I think it's normal, safe mode, selective startup, etc.. Try selective or safe mode and see if you can make the thing boot.

Thanks for the reply.
Tried Safe Mode, but went right back to the same place after the W98 logo came on.

If I were in your shoes then I would probably try a scanreg /restore. Do the same CTRL thing and choose command prompt. At the prompt type in Scanreg /restore and choose a good known working registry before you had any problems. As I said, this is what I would do but see what others suggest. HTH

Hi FZWG,
Did this just start yesterday? April 26 is the day the CIH virus hits. See this thread (http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33069) and check out the links.

Final outcome:
Had to Fdisk and Format HDD, and then install W98SE from scratch.
Nothing else worked.
