View Full Version : Is it possible to OC a 200mhz Pentium Pro.....
.....without causing instability? I have an Intel VS440FX Mobo w/ an Intel 82440/1FX 440FX (Natoma) chipset, 256mb RAM (4-64mb SIMMs). Don't know if it really matters, but I'm currently using Rain for processor cooling.....
If it's possible, how would I go about it? -kd5-
Forgot to mention, I'm running Win98se.....

Hi kd5,
One of the members here has a Pentium Pro 200MHz and I think he had it overclocked, so it is possible.
Whenever you overclock a processor it will generate more heat, so you have to think about getting a better heatsink and make sure your case has really good cooling. You might be able to find a high performance Pentium Pro heatsink/fan somewhere on the net.
You should have at least 1 fan in the lower front of your case to bring cool air in and at least 1 fan (besides the power supply fan) on the upper rear of the case to remove the heated air.
I'm not exactly sure how to overclock your Pentium Pro, but if it's like the other Intel CPU's and is multiplier locked, you'll only be able to increase the FSB setting.
But since you're using a Intel motherboard, you probably won't have much luck overclocking it as Intel motherboards are made with stability in mind, not overclocking. If you know how to raise the FSB setting, you can give it a try...but from what I understand, Intel motherboards are not overclocking friendly.
Remember also that there are risks involved with overclocking. There's a very slight chance you could damage something on your motherboard. Data corruption is also possible, and of course, system instability.

Thank you Cricket. I'll definitely be doing quite a bit more research before I even consider trying it. The last thing I need right now is instability.
Thanks again, -kd5-

I read in tomshardware that the pro is running about as fast as it is going to go without major heat issues. This is from way back in the day so there may be heatsinks that can get rid of the increased heat available nowadays...
Have fun, is this a dual cpu jobbie by the way?

A 200mhz CPU isnt worth 10 cents.

i have a p200 running in my box.. i dont have the mobo number here but its an asus board and fsb/multiplier jumpers are right on the board. yours might be capable of increasing that way

Howdy,
The P-Pro can be overclocked but the results vary wildly dependant on the CPU "step code" and how much trouble you are willing to go through.
Many of the 265k cache variants tolerate a multiplier increase to give you 233mhz.
Note to PlasaBird:
While in your eyes a 200mhz CPU has no worth, those that know the P-Pro and similar CPUs know how to make them perform. While you have every right to state what you did, I found your comment not very helpful to both this forum and the original post.
Yep - a 200 MHz Pentium Pro can put much more modern processors to shame if you are running a true 32 bit OS. As far as the overclocking goes, I believe Hpro has one pushing close to 400 MHz.
Not only that, a "lowly" P200 MMX is plenty of horsepower for a general websurfer and office machine - I have several customers still using machines of this era on their office networks as workstations very well, thank you. Less than a year ago, I was still running a 200 MMX as my primary machine. With 192 megs ram and NT4 Workstation, it was far from shabby for what I do.
