How to remove Gnome

I have installed RH7.1 with both KDE and GNOME i do not use gnome at all is it possible to remove it without reinstalling if so how?

Hi,

You can remove Gnome easily through the package manager. Just tell it to uninstall Gnome.

I would be careful about removing it though. You may be using some Gnome programs in KDE. i.e.- AbbiWord, gnumeric, gnuCash, gToaster, etc. come to mind. And if you uninstall Gnome those programs will also be removed. So, unless you are short on space, I'd leave it alone. You can uninstall the extras such as screen savers, system sounds, and such. But you will still need the Gnome core files to keep those Gnome programs running.

Thanks for the reply OPPS! but i really dont use any gnome apps even in kde I see them there in the menu but havint used them at all. I dont know how to use the package manager could you give a step by step to remove gnome

OK,

I'm using Mandy, but if you are using KDE, then Kpackage should be included with it.

Open a terminal, su to root, then type "kpackage" (without quotes). That should open Kpackage with root privilges for you. then scroll down 'till you find the entries for Gnome and start uninstalling them. Kpackage is quite easy to use, so you shouldn't have any trouble with it.

**Disclaimer!!** This process may break something so PLEASE be careful! If you aren't sure what something is, leave it. Better to have extra stuff floating around than be mad!

That said, Kpackage will give you a short discription of what each package is to help you decide weather to keep or toss.
