Hello:

I had been running Diablo II on windows 98 for sometime with 128 megs of ram on a slot PIII 550. Now that I've moved into a newer computer(my own build) Diablo II is crappin out on me. Is the a software compatibility issue that I should know about or a download that is required.

Here are my stats:

Windows XP Pro
amd 1600+
128megs or ram

I think is just need more ram but is there something else I need also? Please let me know?

Thanks

I'm sure more ram would be a good thing !
Try here for tweaks to Diablo 2 for Windows XP

Hello:

I also forgot to include that I'm refering to DiabloII on b.net (on-line play). See the thing is I've checked with all my friends and they have no lag what so ever this includes all different Microsoft OS's Different Systems and different connects to the internet. So this means that it is me. (my comp) and this is not good!

I use MSN to get on to the internet. I have a motoroal softmodem. Please I need some sort of solution to this problem!

Thanks in advance for ne help

Do a search on Google for connection speed checkers and see what your actual on-line speed is. My kids are using systems way older than yours and not having a lag problem .

Upgrade the amount of RAM, the minimum for running XP is 128MB of RAM. Also, grab a different modem if you can. Get something like the USR 2997 (I think that's the number) 56k PCI modem. It's hardware controlled, will be more reliable and faster, not to mention that it will lift a burden off of your CPU.

Hello:

I did as requested. I get online every time at 28.8 through MSN(this sucks i know). I ran the test and it said 21.2kbs which isn't too bad. I really don't think this is the problem though. This is because I had been previously running DiabloII on windows 98 on a system that had a PIII 550 and i DID have extra ram in it but what ever. I think that I need additional ram in my system I have 128 and I though that XP requires 64 itself so another 128?

I'll just ditto Furius92 , yes get more ram and look into a better modem to take some load off the processor.

Well, actually, I'd get another 256MB of RAM. You are using DDR right? It won't be much more, but if you are really tight on money, the 128MB will work too. Windows XP has a minimum requirement of 128MB. You could probably get 256MB of Kingston or PNY PC2100 and a USR 2997 56k modem for about $115 or so plus a small amount of shipping. Be sure to buy all parts from www.newegg.com or www.mwave.com

Hello:

I'm not familiar with modems could you give me or lead me to a break down of modems. Also what is USR? I've seen reference to it but I do not know what it is? Also what are your thoughts on an external modem?

Thanks?

Hello:

Yeah I'm using DIMM not DDR so cost is a bit less but the ram i guess is a bit less effective? I found a deal from a friend on PC133 128mb ram of 20$ straight up from himself so I believe that I will take that off but this modem hmmm.....(as i've only 35 bucks left : ( ) I'll have to get back to you on that. Do you think I would see an improvement with 128 or not?(Enough of one to play)

USR is just an abbreviation for US Robotics (http://www.usrobotics.com). They're one of the best known providers of PC modems.

External modems are very nice for a few reasons. One, they relieve alot of the burden off of your processor. Two, they don't take up another slot on your motherboard. Three, they are usually very reliable and fast.

As for XP, I'm using 512 Mb on mine. I was using 256 Mb but noticed the system getting a bit sluggish if I just finished running a few programs or playing some games. After upgrading to 512, I've not had a single problem. (Other than a nasty Worm, but I've since installed an Anti-Virus program... but that's another story!) :)

Best of luck!
