Hi allnamestaken,

Go to Newegg.com or MWave.com and spec out a 1GHz Duron or Celeron system.

A motherboard with on-board video and audio, a decent case, 20GB HD, floppy, CD-ROM or DVD, a modem or NIC and a couple of fans probably won't set you back very much.

I'm a Intel guy, so I would just build a real basic Celeron system. But it really doesn't matter...AMD or INTEL will both build up into really good systems.

If you are not using the computer at the same time as the child, you can use a swappable hard drive situation. Essentially, you clone the hard drive (then edit the programs/files). The kid has her "own" computer and can't access your stuff at all.

With a bit of shopping, you can put together a child's computer with parts from a computer show for less than $300 COMPLETE! I wouldn't worry about UPGRADABLITY.

Last week an office supply chain had a 20 GB hard drive (5200 RPM) for $59;

I could walk into a computer show and walk out with a case, keyboard, mouse, CD ROM , floppy, and speakers for less than $75.

You can get an Asus TUIS-M all in one motherboard, Celeron, and 128 MB RAM for about $170

Used monitor $50!

It'll work just fine for a kiddie.

I agree, the best option would probably be as Asus TUSL2-C or Intel D815EFVLU (has onboard video, sound, and network)with a 1GHz+ Celeron, 128MB of RAM, and a Maxtor or WD 20GB hard drive. It'll work great for internet and small games.

If you buy the Abit AT7 for 160, it is pretty expensive, but it has onboard everyhting, then just get a 1gig CPU a 50 dollar case USB mouse and keyboard a monitor and head hpones rather than speakers becasue kids always find ways to make annoying noises, trust me I was one not too long ago :)

Check this thread for a zippy little celeron computer. It would more than meet your needs.
