How To Network

Ok well ive been on the Linksys website and there is abosolutly didly squat on thier readings(if your a newbie like me). All I would like to know is:

What networking system do you like to use?/ How much?


How does it setup?( I have a Dell downstairs and my own upstairs 2 floors. )


How do I use it? ( I have 98SE on my Dell and XP on my own)

If you can use the SIMPLEST terms possible. Thanks and I hope to hear from you

Hardest part is running the CAT 5 cable. Once you have that accomplished, setting up the network is a snap.

Windows has it's own networking software built in. It's just a matter of configuring it.

Like I said, running the CAT 5 cable is the hardest part, if it is impossible to run cable, then you have to go wireless. This method is way more expensive, and not nearly as fast as cable.

Depends on your ISP, but typically Windows XP will find the network no problem. Then its just a matter of creating a network disk in XP to use on your 98 machine, or you can set it up manually.

Get the cables run, and post back for more detailed info as the project moves along.

I think BFD is on to something here. There are a lot of choices when it comes to setting up a network. It is hard to expain it here in generic terms. Once you understand the basics, networking is really simple. As with anything new, your learning curve will be high at first.

I prefer to use a router. Right now I have a router with a hub but I am going to upgrade to a router/switch combo soon. When I got these, I was like you. I did not have a clue how to set it all up. I just took my time and followed the directions that were provided. I learn better from doing most of the time.

I think you need to take a look at PCMech's networking articles (http://www.pcmech.com/networking.htm). The basic articles will answer a lot of your questions.

Hint, you can hook two computers together using a crossover cable, but networks have a habit of growing. Suddenly your crossover cable is gathering dust in your parts box. I think you would be better off startiing with a hub or a combination router/switch.

If you have or will be getting broadband Internet, start off with a router/switch such as the Linksys BEFSR41. Then all you need is a Cat 5 cable from each computer to the router/switch and you plug the broadband modem into the router/switch. Everything else you need to establish a network is in Windows except for the NIC cards, each computer needs one.

Note that the router/switch WILL work without an Internet connection as a simple "hub" and DHCP server (assigns IP addresses to the computers so they can see each other).
