Mandrake 8.2.... Help me!!!

I just installed this last night, not knowing a thing about Linux.

Let me fill you in on what I'm wanting to do. I would like for this system to boot up upon power restore all by itself. I've already enabled this option in the bios. I'd like for the OS (Mandrake 8.2) to open (without Then, I'd like for it to auto-start a dedicated game of my choosing. I know how to setup this kind of action in a Windows system, but not in Linux. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

***edit*** Great... now I've done it. While tinkering with it I guess I changed something. With a clean install, I would get a "windows-like" interface. Now it just gives me a "dos-like" interface. It asks me for my login and password and then just sits there like a lump on a stump and says [tiretool@localhost tiretool]S

I'm not sure I can help you with the first problem. What game do you want it to auto-start. If it is a Windows game....good luck. Windows programs will not run on Linux without something like Wine (a Windows emulator program). Wine is not easy to set up or use.

As far as the login problem....after you enter your username and password type "startx" (without the quotes of course). Go back into control center and re-enable the graphical login.

As for the game... I've been thinking about trying out a Counter Strike server... They offer a Linux version of it. I guess it's just one of those "try it and see" type of things.

I'm just not much of a gamer so I've never done what you are trying to do. I'm sure there is a way though. You might want to try an internet search for the info. That is one thing I really like about Linux...it is well documented. Sometimes a bit too well documented. It is hard to find what you are looking for because there is so much info out there.

I'd also like to suggest www.linuxquestions.org. The guys on this board are linux fanatics and could probably answer your question right away. It is another great source for Linux info as well.

I do still have a Win98 Machine around there though. Along with a WinXP and a Win2000 Advanced Server box.

I think you have to set up the machine to "log in a single user at boot". I know this was an option in the install of mandrake 8.2, or RH 7.2, but I can't remember which one I saw it in. I never use it, because of the local security problems associated with it. There is an autostart folder on the KDE desktop for your start program link. Some of these 'server' programs require intervention at start up, so I don't know if this will work for you. If it were a non graphical program, it would be easier to do, by modifying the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, but not really an option for something that depends upon the Graphical user interface.

Depending on the speed of the server, and if that's all it's used for, it might be better to start better to run the server software just from the CLI instead of on top of a GUI (less resources used that way). Don't know if this would work with the software you're using though, but hope this helps.
