GRRR SLACKWARE problems!

Okay, I'm installing slackware 8.0 totally fresh on my second computer, and I make a swap and a / partition, it all goes well, installs, I config network, mouse etc.... It says its all done, press ctrl alt del to reboot. I reboot, then it comes up with ERROR LOADING OPERATING SYSTEM. I can use the boot floppy to get to the slack CLI, but then when I type startx I get errors! Did I do something wrong with partitioning? I made hda1 / with 19000 mb, and made it bootable, then I made swap 1100 MB, and changed the type to swap (hex 82) thats on hda5. What can I do?

WOW...Slackware. You're brave. I haven't done that yet but I've been thinking about it. I guess I just want the "Slacker" title.

What bootloader does Slack use? Kinda sounds like a LILO or GRUB problem. Where did you install the bootloader? MBR or first boot partition?

During the install, where you able to configure X and test it? Other distros do that. Once you log in you can try to configure X with the command, xconfig or configx, I forget which.

Okay, I reinstalled again, this time setting up LILO correctly on the MBR, but I still get the error when doing startx. Is there a different command I need to use? When I do startx I get all the loading stuff then (EE) NO DEVICES DETECTED and FATAL SERVER ERROR NO SCREENS FOUND.

Oh btw when installing slack I set gnome to be the default, not kde....

Ok...the command that I was looking for earlier is "xconfigurator".

What video card do you have and is it supported by Linux? What kind of monitor?

Bah I'm dumb! I never ran xf86config.... Well after some time with that, I got it all set up the way I wanted! 1024x768@85hz. Took some effort, but now I am in gnome, graphics are good and the net works! Baby steps I know, but it feels good.

That's great. Guess I'm gonna have to go get Slack myself. Other than this little problem, how was it to install? Does it use a GUI installer or is it all text?

Slackware isn't all that hard to setup. It just has a text install and makes you create your own partitions using Fdisk. At least on version 7.1, it did. It kind of throws some files in funny places. Apache, on RedHat, Mandrake, is in /etc. In Slackware, it is in /var. I usually move it to /usr/local/apache/ , since that is the default locale. Most everything else except for the graphical loader is quite similar.
