I would like to install win xp on my sys that already has win 98 but keep both sys due to hardware comp. with xp. I have read several articles about doing this but they can be very confusing. I have 4 hdd and want to put win xp on hdd f(#4) and keep win 98se on c(#1) . All the articles I have read deal with partitions on one drive and I am looking for info on dual booting 98/xp on seperate drives. I understand the mbr that must be on drive c for both os but am looking for instructions on install on different hdd

This is the same setup I have right now. (98_SE/XP) You just need to boot from your WinXP CD which will run the setup program, you will come to a point that will
ask you which drive & partition you want to install XP on, it also gives you the option to format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS, pretty much does the same thing fdisk does just looks different.

I have read that you should not change from fat32 to ntfs because it will effect 98se somehow is this true.

98 can't read the ntfs file system, but ntfs can read 98 file system,
I have the same setup, 98se/xp-pro.

I need to be able to send files from xp to 98 for my scanner which is not xp compatible so I should probably keep xp in the fat32 setup, do you have any idea how this will effect xp performance

It's faster I think, fat32 that is. You may still be able to use your scanner with xp try looking for the latest driver at:
driverguide.com if you cant find one for xp then try installing the one for win2k. Even if you did set it up NTFS you could still scan things in win98 & when you booted to winxp the file you saved from your scanner will be right there to do with whatever you want, I guess thats what your saying

You cant really scan a computer file can you?
I have had a dual boot setup with 98 & xp both of these ways (98 & xp using fat32 and 98 fat32 xp ntfs) I would say that your right, use fat32 for winxp also.
