I am having a problem with a pc. I am running windows 2000. This friends wonted me to fix it for her. When you put a cd in the cd-rom drive it wont auto run you have to manually install a program. Where can you go to make it auto run. The last time she brought it over the auto run was working. But now its not. Please help. Every thing else is working fine. Thanks for any help.

Hi Lois,

Under Device Manager, the CD-ROM drive Properties tab should have an "Enable auto-run" checkbox. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your replay. I check in Device manger. all its says there is cd player volume, also digital audio. I thought that there was a place to turn on auto play but I sure cant find it. Is there is other place that I can try. I have install two different cd rom drive and none of them will auto play. So there has got to be a place to change it to auto play.

"Is there is other place that I can try" you could follow the link I provided to Microsoft's fix for this, I am unaware of any other way.

Thanks so much Wedor i went to the site that you send and changed it to 1 like it said to. Then reboot it still didn't work. I will changed the ide cable back to the old in the morning and see if that help. Maybe that was the problem in the reg. Thanks you.

If you hold down the shift key when inserting the CD does it auto start then? There are two other registry keys listed in that link that pertain to this.

Thanks Wedor, yes I did try the shift key and that didn't help. I also tryed the other registry keys that was there and it didn't do any thing. I also tryed the last know good configuration, didn't work either. Guess she can just install with add and remover program. I guess if I format and reinstall win 2000 that would work but dont wont to do that. Thanks for all your help. This is the best place to find information.

Is this a burned CD? or just a normal comercial one? Burned CD's take longer to start and CDRW's take even longer. Does this happen with all CD's? or just one in particular?

You can download and install TweakUI (do a Google search for it) and then on the Paranoia tab, check "Play audio CD's automatically" and "Play data CD's automatically"

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your help. I took her pc back to her and show her how to install her program without auto play. she was in a hurry to get it back. And it was the same weather it was burned cd or not. But I download TweakUI to check it out, it might help if I have that problem again. Thanks again for the help.
